What's going on with Honors this week?

The next Speaker Series of the semester is this Saturday. Here are the details:

Hall of Flags, Robinson Hall     11:00 – 12 Noon

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Sean Maloney, Royal Military College of Canada

Presentation:  "Canada in Afghanistan: Your Neighbour at War"

Abstract:  From 2001 to today, America's closest ally and trading partner has stayed   the course in Afghanistan when others did not.  On one of the fronts of the war against the Al Qaeda movement, Canada's soldiers have been fighting tenaciously to protect Kandahar, Afghanistan's 'second city,' and over the course of the past three years, have successfully disrupted insurgent efforts to re-take the city.  At the same time Canadian efforts to work alongside the Afghans to improve their lives and livelihoods are starting to pay off. This work is not done and, unless there is continued interest and support for the effort, it will not be completed and we will have more 9/11s.

This week in International Film Series we will be watching Battle Royale which is a Japanese violent/horror movie. Considered to be a modern day Lord of the Flies, the film is about a futuristic Japan where the youth are feared by everyone. A brief synopsis follows:

The adults lost confidence and fearing the youth, passed a new law:  The Millennium Educational Reform Act, also known as the BR Act.
The BR Act sends one class, chosen by impartial lottery, to a deserted island, provides them with weapons and tells them to kill all their classmates. The last one alive can go home. To make sure the rules are kept to and that students don't linger in one area too long, each student is wearing a collar, which monitors their pulse, sends information back to the HQ of their position, and if necessary, explodes, killing whoever is wearing it. Each hour a new area of the island is deemed a Danger Zone, whoever is in there has their collars explode. If no one dies within a 24 hour period, all collars explode.
