 Dr. Jim Strayer (Winner 2007-08)

Years at LHU: 22

Department:   Mathematics

Education: 1979 B.A. Mathematics (Shippensburg State College); 1987 Ph.D. Mathematics (The Pennsylvania State University)

Course Taught: HONR 105: Mathematics in Contemporary Society

Professional Interest: My Ph.D. is in an area of mathematics called number theory which has applications in cryptography and the analysis of games.  I have written two textbooks, one on linear programming (MATH 320 here) and one on number theory (MATH 302 here).  I am also a metagrobologist, one who enjoys puzzles and games.  Since puzzles and games frequently incorporate mathematical principles in their design or solution, expect to see them used in HONR 105.  I have also written a manuscript entitled Experiments in Recreational Mathematics which may eventually see publication.

But my true passion is teaching!  While I remain active in the greater mathematical community, my main interests lie in my mathematics classrooms at Lock Haven University.  Expect more excitement than you can handle!

Personal Interest: I am an avid collector of puzzles that emphasize the interplay of mechanical principles and fine art.  One room of my home is completely devoted to my "puzzle museum."  (Free admission upon request!)  I also enjoy reading, but nothing too heavy outside of mathematics.  I am currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Clinton County Women's Center.

Dr. Joseph P. McGinn (Winner 2006-07)

Years at LHU: 18

Department:  Department of Philosophy; Director Global Honors Program

Education:  PHD The Pennsylvania State University, USA; Commonwealth Scholar, Edinburgh University, Scotland; MA University of Waterloo, Canada; BA (Hons.) University of Manitoba, Canada

Courses Taught: Honors Historical and Philosophical Studies I; First Year Excellence Ethics

Professional Interests: My primary areas of interest in philosophy include metaphysics, idealism, pragmatism, and questions involving the intersection of ethics, politics and culture.  I am active in several scholarly associations such as the American Philosophical Association and the Canadian Philosophical Association.  In addition, it is my honor to hold leadership positions in two wonderful organizations:  I am the Director of the LHU Global Honors Program and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Canadian Studies Consortium.

Personal Interests:  I love the outdoors.  In the summer I am an avid cyclist and kayaker.  In the winter I try to get out to ski hills near and far as often as possible.
