Mathematics
Dr. James (Jim)
Strayer

Years at LHU: 23
Department: Mathematics
Education: 1979 B.A. Mathematics (Shippensburg
State College); 1987 Ph.D. Mathematics (The Pennsylvania State
University)
Courses Taught:
HONR 105:
Mathematics in Contemporary Society
Professional Interest: My Ph.D. is in an area of
mathematics called number theory which has applications
in cryptography and the analysis of games. I have
written two textbooks, one on linear programming (MATH
320 here) and one on number theory (MATH 302 here). I
am also a metagrobologist, one who enjoys puzzles and
games. Since puzzles and games frequently incorporate
mathematical principles in their design or solution,
expect to see them used in HONR 105. I have also
written a manuscript entitled Experiments in
Recreational Mathematics which may eventually see
publication.
But my true
passion is teaching! While I remain active in the
greater mathematical community, my main interests lie in
my mathematics classrooms at Lock Haven University.
Expect more excitement than you can handle!
Personal
Interest: I am an avid collector of puzzles that
emphasize the interplay of mechanical principles and
fine art. One room of my home is completely devoted to
my "puzzle museum." (Free admission upon request!) I
also enjoy reading, but nothing too heavy outside of
mathematics. I am currently serving on the Board of
Directors of the Clinton County Women's Center.
