Population Control: Discussion or
Debate?
Forums can be one of two things, highly
educational or highly tense. To my surprise, the group I
was put in for my forum was a little bit educational,
and very much tense. The reason it was so tense was due
to the fact that some Honors kids have a notion in their
head that whatever they say is right, and therefore
everyone else’s opinion is wrong. I on the other hand
disagree with this notion. To spark discussion, I would
say things that I do not agree with but for the sake of
discussion I said them anyways. It’s just sad really,
that fellow students who are in their second and third
years of college can’t follow directions after all these
years. We should come into forums with open minds, and
for some uneducated people, closed mouths. I value
everyone’s opinion and like to hear it. But, with some
students discussion isn’t an option. The forum turned
into a debate between what people thought was right and
wrong, which is everything a forum isn’t about. It’s
about talking and solving current problems. So for
future reference, if you don’t have anything smart to
say, don’t say anything at all.
The “OW” Is Outta This World
Almost every Honors kid has seen somewhere a copy of the
Occasional Word, or OW, lying around. That was me in the
beginning of the semester. I didn’t pay it much mind
because I figured, how interesting could a newsletter
really be? My viewpoints changed when I got asked to be
a writer for the OW. When I first got asked I was a
little hesitant because I never really read the OW and
didn’t know what is was all about. One night I took a
copy from the Honors house and decided to skim over it
before I went to bed. Skimming turned into reading, and
one issue turned into more and more. The OW isn’t just
some boring newsletter that you would expect. It has fun
facts, poems, short stories, a note from the Honors
director, study abroad articles and much more. But the
fun part about writing for the OW is getting to see your
name in print. It’s like you’re a small town celebrity.
Ok, well not quite to that extent but you get the gist.
It’s so fun having no restrictions on what to write
about. It’s quite liberating actually. You are so
dictated in school on what to write essays on that it’s
a nice change of pace to write what you want to. It’s an
added bonus that the OW counts as an activity group hour
too (:
Busy Bee Week For Me
This week there are so many Honors events
going on it is hard to keep track of them all. There was
a Speaker Series earlier this week which I did not get
to attend unfortunately. But through the grapevine I
heard it was very educational.
The Honors Banquet tickets sales end this
week so make sure to get yours! There is going to be a
lot of good food and awards and dancing! Not to mention
everyone is going to be there. And then there is
scheduling which is today. I was so excited that my
schedule for next semester consists of me going to class
on Tuesdays and Thursdays and one Wednesday class. How
much sweeter can life get? The only problem I have with
scheduling is that you have to get cleared by an advisor
which is silly. We are in college I think we are big
enough to handle scheduling on our own. Another problem
I ran into was that I recently changed my major so some
classes say that I have not met the requisites for the
course. This is a problem because my advisor said it
would be fine to take them. No big deal it just gets to
be a pain running around trying to get in certain
classes. But otherwise I am excited for next semester.
Finals are coming up so this month is looking to be
quite busy!
FDG Is As Chill As Can Be
Once a week for an hour Honors students
get together in a group know as a Freshman Discussion
Group or FDG. It’s a time to get together with friends
and relax. Each freshman in Honors was assigned a group
at the beginning of the year. During the first semester
each student had to attend two hours of FDG. As your
semesters increase, your FDG time decreases. FDG for me
allowed me to adjust to college life easier. Going to
college is a big step in anyone’s life. I know I was
nervous my first day and my FDG leaders and group member
made the switch from home to college life much smoother.
It’s also a good stress reliever because college is
quite tedious and hard at times. One week you can have
no homework the next week you don’t have enough time to
eat. So it is a comforting thought to know that when you
go to FDG you don’t have to think about school for an
hour. You don’t have to think about crazy drama
happening, and you don’t have to think about walking the
eight mile hike back to the dorms. FDG is just a great
place overall to relax and chill.
Oh My, Oh Me, Class Scheduling I See
It’s about that time when all college
students go into a frenzy about scheduling classes.
Thankfully Honors student can sit back and enjoy the
mayhem at hand. Scheduling classes early has to be one
of the best perks about being in Honors. I get nervous
as it is scheduling in fear that I am going to do it
wrong, so it really helps relieve stress by scheduling
early. It’s great because I wake up at 8 am knowing that
any class I want to take I can because they are all
going to be open. This alone should be enough to make
anyone want to join Honors.
Actually I never really
thought about all the benefits of being in Honors until
now. It’s not just a name, it’s an experience. I went
into the program thinking “I’m going to have Honor’s
written on my degree and that’s that.” That’s not the
case anymore. I’m not in Honors for just the name but
the perks as well. (: I like having smaller classes with
kids who actually care about school. I like the fact
that if I need to get away we have our own Honors House.
Not to mention I like having friends who give me
competition in school. Most of the time the activities
are fun and allow me to take a break from school work.
All in all Honors is a lot of fun contrary to popular
belief, and it really has a lot of nice benefits to go
along with it.
Just Dance, It’s Going to Be Ok
Don’t lie. When you hear the word Honors you think of a
bunch of nerdy kids who like to study and read, and not
to mention socially inept. Well I hate to break it to
you, but that’s just not the case. I was nervous my
first day coming to college. I took a look around
thinking “Dear God, what have I gotten myself into?” But
my opinion completely changed when I started to go to my
Freshman Discussion Group and started classes with a
variety of Honors kids. Not only are these people
genuine and down to earth, but they’re smart AND fun.
I repeat, Honors kids do know how to have a fun time.
When you have school work piling up to the sky, and
you’re going to light yourself on fire if you listen to
one more lecture, you just dance! It just so happens
that Thursday nights are the perfect nights for a
rendezvous on the town. The Cell Block in Williamsport
is the perfect place for Honor’s kids to go and dance
and have a good time.
I get there and the music is poppin’ and everyone is
looking snazzy in their clothes. I run into a whole
bunch of kids from Honors who needed to get out just
like me. We all danced and had a good time. I recommend
making a fool out of yourself in high heels anytime you
need a good laugh.

It’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Hello everyone. I know the
anticipation has been eating away at everyone for me to
start this. Well it just so happens that today is your
lucky day. Today you get to hear what cool cats do in
the Honors Program here at Lock Haven University.
To start off, I would like to
make the assumption that everyone and their brother here
at LHU has had cabin fever at least once this semester.
Swamped with work, drowned by tests, it seems like a one
way ticket to hell. Thankfully, this all changed on one
beautiful day in February. Waking up to the little voice
in my head screaming “Midterms,” I quickly threw on some
clothes and rushed down to Honors: History &
Philosophical Studies. I took my seat and said a little
prayer and began my test. After it was over, I danced
out of the classroom and up to my dorm. One funny thing
you learn when you come to the Haven is this: everything
is up hill. It’s lovely. You get to huff and puff and
look like a chain smoker. It’s quite attractive.
Anyways, later on in the day I realized that I have to
attend Stress Relief, an Honors activity group. I
arrived at the Honor’s House to the usual attendees. We
gathered all of our bags and decided to go on a nature
walk since it was so gorgeous outside.
No matter how many times I walk
along the Susquehanna there is always going to be that
beautiful and free feeling to it. Maybe it’s just me,
but every time I walk by water it just gives me this
feeling of contentment inside. So walking along the Dike
was a treat for me. The sun was shining and not to
mention my tanning package was paying off. Everyone
broke off into their own small groups and we went on our
jolly little way. By the end of the walk everyone was
relaxed and ready for spring break!
