How does the Global Honors Program award Scholarships?
Scholarships are merit based. In awarding scholarships,
we consider several factors including SAT score, GPA,
Class Rank, Recommendation Letters, Entrance Essay, as
well as the Admission Interview. Up to half or our
entrance scholarships may be awarded to applicants who
apply for admission before December 11th.
Presidential
Scholarships:
$2,000 per year for up to 4 years. Each year the program
makes four Presidential Scholarships available for
entering freshmen. To retain this scholarship beyond the
first year, the student must remain in “good standing”
in the Honors Program. To be in “good standing” a
student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and fulfill all
co-curricular requirements of the program.
Academic
Honors Scholarship:
$2000 one year scholarship. Each year the program makes
about 13-15 of these scholarships available. Each year,
upperclassmen are automatically considered for Academic
Honors Scholarships. The top five sophomores, juniors,
and seniors with the highest GPAs and who are in “good
standing” receive these scholarships.
NSF
Nanoscience Scholarship:
Up to $10,000 per year for up to four years. These
scholarships are made possible by a grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF). They are available
to incoming freshmen students who have unmet financial
need as determined by the FAFSA and who will Major in
one of the science disciplines at LHU. Recipients of
this scholarship will also be expected to enroll in the
Associate in Applied Science (Nanotechnology) program as
a second degree or to pursue a Minor in Nanotechnology.
Full tuition for a Nanomanufacturing Technology (NMT)
semester at Penn State University during the summer
after the sophomore year is also included in this
scholarship opportunity. Finally, recipients of this
scholarship must participate in the Honors Program
during their first year at LHU. They are strongly
encouraged, but it is not required to remain in the
Honors Program after completing their first year of
study.
What are the requirements to get into the Global Honors
Program?
A
complete application to the Global Honors Program will
include your SAT/ACT score, GPA, High School Rank,
Recommendations Letters (we prefer that one letter comes
from an English teacher), an Entrance Essay, List of
High School Activities, as well as an Admission
Interview.
An
average applicant to the Global Honors Program has an
SAT score above 1100 and is in usually in the top
fifteen to twentieth percentile of their high school
class. Students who are weak in one area may still be
competitive if the other areas of their application are
strong.
Applications
to the Lock Haven University Honors Program can be found
online at
http://www.lhup.edu/honors (Please note that
applications to the University are separate from Global
Honors Program applications.)
What are the Co-curricular Requirements for Global
Honors Freshmen?
Freshman
Discussion Groups
(2 hours per week in the fall, 1 hour per week in the
spring)
The
Freshman Discussion Group (FDG) is a small group led by
two honors upperclassmen who serve as mentors for
incoming freshman students. Freshmen Discussion Groups
offer a chance to make new friends and get acclimated
with campus life while sharing an enjoyable experience
with different group activities. Activities are
completely based on the interests of the students and
change from group to group. Students also have the
opportunity to compete against other FDGs in special
events that range from raising money for charities to
athletic and academic-based events.
Activity Groups
(1 hour per week)
Activity Groups are student-led interest groups.
Examples of these are: Arts and Crafts, The Blue Note
(music), Oh Snap (photography), Access the World,
Documentary Film Series, Fresh and Fit, What’s News?,
and many more.
Speaker
Series
(2 per semester)
Public
Issue Forums
(2 per semester)
Community
Service
(10 hours freshmen year, 5 hours each year after)
How long will it take to hear back about being accepted
into the Global Honors Program?
After
your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the
Director of the Global Honors Program and the other
members of our selection committee. Normally, applicants
receive a decision within two weeks after the
application deadline they meet.
How
much work is the Global Honors Program?
Membership
in the Global Honors Program is open to students in
every major and program at LHU. Currently, we have
members from all majors, including the 3+2 Physician
Assistant Program. We also have many varsity athletes in
our program. Honors students are often involved in
activities over and above those sponsored by the Global
Honors Program. Honors students have no problem keeping
up with the program’s requirements. The freshmen year
in the Global Honors Program is the most intense;
requirements lessen after the first year.
What are the benefits of being in the Global Honors
Program?
Small
discussion-oriented classes, priority registration,
leadership training and experiences, scholarship
opportunities, social interaction (friendships),
regional and national honors conferences, help applying
for high quality internships, access to the PA SSHE
Summer Honors Program/Scholarships, access to the Honors
House, membership in a supportive, and learning-centered
honors community are all benefits to being in the Global
Honors Program.
Is there special housing for Global Honors Program
students?
Honors
students live in the same residence halls as other
freshmen. However, entering honors freshmen can request
to be paired with another Honors student.
Honors
students also have access to the Honors House – a “home
away from home” on campus!
What are the Global Honors classes like? Do they fufill
general education requirements?

the freshman year, students will be required to take
Honors Composition and Philosophy during the fall
