Perks.
We are a program for students
by students. Of course there were going to be some
pretty nice perks.
Honors House-
No, Honors students don't actually live in the Honors
House, but it is our home away from home on campus. It
comes complete with two televisions, a computer lab,
wireless internet, comfy couches, meeting rooms, and a
game room where you'll find a two person basketball
game, foosball and air hockey. There is also a fully
functional shower in the upstairs, but we don't think
anyone has ever used it. It is also the central location
to find any of the staff members like the Director,
Secretary, Student Associate Directors or Graduate
Assistant.
More than just what it has in it, though, is what it
represents. Honors is all about community and the House
is where it all happens. When it's nice out we
play games and have picnics on the front porch and lawn.
We hold all of our group meetings here. Many a student
has been seen napping on one of the couches or playing
board games with friends. There is always someone to see
here or something going on and it's the perfect place to
get away from the dorms and campus.

Community &
Long-lasting Friendships-
If you ask any of our Alumni or current students,
most will probably tell you that the best part about
being in Honors is the community it provides. So many of
our students met their very best college friends on
their first day at the university in their freshmen
discussion groups. We pride ourselves on being a team
and a support network, and that becomes evident within
your first week.

Freshmen Orientation
i.e. early move-in
There are roughly 1500 freshmen that will be moving
into campus the Saturday before classes start. That's
1499 other cars that you have to worry about (provided
each person only packs one vehicle and that tends to not
be the case)! But guess what? You won't have to worry
about that. Honors students move in on Friday. They only
compete for parking spots with 89 other families spread
out across campus. That makes a HUGE difference. On top
of that, we will provide upperclassmen to move all of
your stuff. Unless you feel like being generous, you
don't have to lift a finger. We give you time to move in
and then we get started right away introducing you to
campus, town and other Honors students. By the time
Monday comes and you are entering your first class, not
only will you know where to find it, you already might
know some people in it.

Priority Registration-
Sometimes scheduling classes can be a mad scramble
to get what you want, especially for freshmen who
schedule last. Not if you're in Honors. We schedule with
the athletes and grad students meaning that you get any
class you want at the times you need to have them. This
is major for those type A personalities who pile
academics, campus activities and fun clubs onto their
schedules.

Scholarships-
What could be better than coming to college? Coming
to college and having someone give you money! Honors
offers two types of freshmen scholarships, the
Presidential and the Academic Honors, that you don't
even have to apply for, each of which is worth $1000 per
semester. The staff and Honors committee will decide
based on your application. Presidential Scholars will
continue to receive this until they graduate provided
they stay active in Honors and keep up their GPA. Plus,
the top five individuals in each upperclassmen class
will receive a $1500 scholarship for the year.

Small class sizes-
While most of the classes at LHU are pretty small in
size with no more than 40 students, sometimes Gen Ed
classes can have some pretty large numbers.
Honors students take Honors designated Gen Ed courses
that are capped at 20 students. This makes for much
greater discussion and a better opportunity to really
get to know the professors.

Real life experiences-
Since we are almost completely student run, there
are a ton of opportunities to improve the skills that
employers and grad schools are looking for the most. We
offer leadership training and a variety of speakers and
discussions to help in the areas of leadership,
followership and communication. It is some of the best
hands on training you could receive at college and the
reason our program has stood out in the nation for its
innovation in involving students.

Free summer trip
abroad-
Going abroad at any point of your college career is
strongly encouraged by the Program, but to help you
reach that goal, every year in collaboration with the
other 13 PA State System of Higher Education university
Honors Programs, we send two students abroad for FREE!
All you have to pay for is your passport and maybe a
book or two. This year Shippensburg is sponsoring a trip
to Belgium and France which will take junior Chris
Brittain and sophomore Athanasia Hatzos on an
exploration of the construction of European Identity.
Past trips have taken students to China, Ghana, Costa
Rica, the Netherlands, Germany, England and Russia to
name a few.

Conferences-
We are members of the National Collegiate Honors
Council and the Northeast Regional Honors Council. Each
year we send students to do presentations at these
conferences. This year's national conference was in San
Antonio, TX and the regional is in Annapolis, MD. Past
conferences have been held in New Orleans, LA, St.
Louis, MO, Denver, CO, Washington, D.C., Providence, RI,
Morristown, NJ, and even Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Conferences are a great way to practice presentation
skills and explore a new city, and definitely a lot of
fun!

Alumni Network-
Our alumni are doing amazing things. And better
still, most of them love to lend a helping hand to
current students. The alumni network is a way for
current Honors students to get in touch with former
students to discuss a profession or maybe do an
internship. We also invite our alumni back to give
speeches on different experiences they have had since
graduation.
And these are just the
perks we could think up on the spot.! Stop by for a
visit sometime and hear all about what Honors has to
offer you from some of the current students.
