A special note for international applicants.

The Honors Program extends a special welcome to international students.  International students have a record of success in honors at Lock Haven University.  We are aware of the special difficulties that will be involved for those who are not native speakers of English and are prepared to support all students as they strive for success.  To suggest the strong international flavor of our program, we have featured on our Honors Program Profile the variety of languages spoken by honors students and the countries our students have studied in.

Honors at the university level in the United States differs from that in many other countries and may be unfamiliar to international students.  The Honors Program at Lock Haven University is designed for any student who is committed to gaining the most academically out of an undergraduate degree and who is willing to work hard to accomplish that objective.  Honors students take several special courses which replace other required courses.  Honors does not require more courses.  Honors students do not take longer to graduate than other students.

It is also important for you to know that there is no penalty of any kind associated with entering the program and then deciding after a semester or two that honors is not for you.  Your official transcript would show that you had taken some honors courses.  It would not show that you started the program and then dropped out, something a few students do every year.

International students are eligible for the merit scholarships available to all honors students and are automatically considered on the basis of their applications to the university and the program.  There also may be tuition assistance available, based on financial need, through the Institute for International Studies.

Because the international application and visa process are lengthy, you are urged to apply early and to use electronic communication as much as possible.  Be sure to check out the special requirements for international students and the electronic application to the university.  Once your TOEFL score has been received and your credentials have been evaluated (requiring 4-6 weeks) and you have been admitted to the university, a decision will be made on your application to the Honors Program.

Thank you for considering the Honors Program.
