HONORS PROGRAM PROFILE, 2003-2004

BASIC FACTS
Founded in 1988 with
20 first-year students, the program currently enrolls 165 with
approximately 90 freshmen admitted each fall, 40 in University Honors
and 50 in First Year Excellence.

UNIVERSITY HONORS (21 credit hours)
Students entering as freshmen take four Honors
courses their first year, fulfilling general education requirements in
composition, literature, philosophy and world history. In succeeding
years students earn a minimum of nine additional Honors credit hours
through a combination of Honors courses and augmented non-Honors
courses. Minimum GPA: 3.2.

UNIVERSITY HONORS WITH DISTINCTION (27
credit hours)
Students complete a minimum of 27 Honors credits including an Honors
Capstone Project. Minimum GPA: 3.2.

FIRST YEAR EXCELLENCE (12 credit hours)
Freshmen take two general education courses each semester of their first
year, satisfying requirements in composition, literature, philosophy and
world history. Minimum GPA: 3.0. Students completing FYE with
GPA of
3.2 or higher may enter University Honors.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Honors students are responsible for organizing and participating in a
variety of co-curricular activities. All students must contribute two
hours per week to Honors Program activities (4 hours for first-semester
University Honors students and 3 hours for first-semester FYE students).
SELECTION AND STANDARDS
Entering freshmen are
selected on the basis of high school grades, SAT scores, essays,
recommendations, and high school activities. Typically, the middle half
of the freshman class has high school class standings between the 80th
and 95th percentiles and combined SATs between 1100 and 1250 (ACT 24 –
28).
Current LHU students
who have completed 1-4 semesters of coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.2
may apply for admission to University Honors. Transfer applications are
welcomed, and credit may be awarded for honors courses taken at other
institutions. Applications may be completed online.

NATIONAL INVOLVEMENT OF LHU HONORS PROGRAM
The Honors
Program is active in the National Collegiate Honors Council at both the
national and regional levels. LHU
honors students have recently attended conferences in Lake George, New
York, Salisbury, Maryland, Orlando, Florida, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Brooklyn,
New York and Washington, D.C.. This year honors students will attend
conferences in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Each year the Honors Program organizes a Public Issues Forum for
the NCHC annual conference and on the web and a Public Deliberation
Workshop for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Many
honors students are active in the Pennsylvania Center for Civic Life.
