Incoming Freshmen

Applicants
to the Global Honors Program are automatically
considered for merit scholarships. No additional
application for
scholarships is necessary, except for the NSF
Scholarship.
· PRESIDENTIAL
SCHOLARSHIPS
of $2000 per year. These scholarships
are renewable for up to four full years. Maintaining
the scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 3.0, as well
as continued good standing in the Global Honors Program.
· ACADEMIC
HONORS SCHOLARSHIPS
of $2000 for first year honors
students. These are one-year scholarships. Each year
thereafter, $1000 Academic Honors Scholarships will be
awarded on a competitive basis to five sophomores, five
juniors and five seniors who have demonstrated superior
academic performance and who are in good standing in the
Global Honors Program.
· NATIONAL
SCIENCE FOUNDATIONS (NSF) SCHOLARSHIPS
of up to $10,000 per year and renewable for up to four
years. Thanks to a major grant from the NSF, LHU is
able to offer significant scholarships to first year
students who choose to major in one of the sciences at
LHU while also enrolling in the Associate in Applied
Science (Nanotechnology) program, either as second major
or as a minor in nanotechnology. To be eligible,
students must demonstrate financial need via the FAFSA,
as well as apply for and participate fully in the Global
Honors Program during their first year. For additional

Students
Academic Honors
Scholarship- $1000 Academic Honors Scholarships will
be awarded on a competitive basis to five sophomores,
five juniors and five seniors who have demonstrated
superior academic performance and who are in good
standing in the Global Honors Program. These are
one-year scholarships.
1.
PASSHE Summer Honors
Program- Each year two LHU
Global Honors Program students join honors students from
the other 14 PASSHE university honors programs to engage
in a deep study of the artistic, cultural, historical or
political character of another country or region of the
world. Participants take two courses and earn six
credits. The courses begin on the campus of the host
university. After studying the country in question for
approximately a week, the participants and their
professors travel as a group to the country under
investigation in order to continue their study of it on
a first hand basis. Recent programs have focused on
diverse countries including Egypt, Belgium, China, and
Ghana. Each participant receives a full scholarship to
cover the major costs of this program. These include
tuition, travel, accommodations and meals.

The Washington Center Internship Program- This
program helps students secure significant internship
experiences in Washington D.C. while also offering them
a range of academic courses whose credits may be
transferred back to their home institutions. Students
who apply to the The Washington Center Internship
Program are automatically considered for scholarships
designed to help cover the costs of this program such as
tuition and accommodations. These scholarships may also
be supplemented by additional scholarships from external
agencies like the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program
The purpose of the Foundation is to
provide a continuing source of highly qualified
scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding
scholarships to college students who intend to pursue
careers in these fields.
Applicable Majors:
mathematics, the natural sciences, or
engineering
Eligibility:
sophomore or junior; Have a college grade-point average
of at least "B"
Award: up to
a maximum of $7,500 annually

Citizenship Requirement:
live in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, and, considered as a single entity, Guam, the
Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of

Fulbright Fellowship
Fulbright grants allow students to pursue
their academic interests in more than 100 countries
around the world. Student Fulbrighters either study at a
university or pursue independent research in the host
country that they have selected. There are special
programs for foreign language teachers.
Applicable Majors:
All
Eligibility:
graduating senior; hold a B.S./B.A. degree; are a
master's or doctoral degree candidate; or are a young
professional or artist; good health
Award: one
fully covered academic year in foreign study

The Harrisburg
Internship Semester (T.H.I.S.)The
Harrisburg Internship offers an exceptional opportunity
for students in the SSHE System to spend one semester in
their Junior or Senior year actively involved in our
State governing process. These internships are not
limited to students in political science or government,
although such students will find this internship
invaluable. Some of our current interns are working in:
the Office of the Budget, Commission on Women, Bureau of
Consumer Protection, House Education Committee,
Department of Mental Health, Department of Labor and
Industry, Environmental Studies, and the Pennsylvania
Historical and Museum Commission. Other areas of state
government are waiting to be discovered by motivated
student interns.
Applicable Majors:
All but political science or government
will benefit more
Eligibility:
Junior or Senior
Award:
students receive a work-study stipend to cover tuition,
room, and board. They also receive 15 credits...9
credits actual internship, 3 credits for a weekly
seminar, and 3 credits for an independent study project.
Students may opt to receive these credits in
Communication Studies or (with some restrictions) in
student's major.

Jack Kent Cooke
Scholarship ProgramThe
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer
Scholarship Program honors excellence by supporting
outstanding community college students with financial
need as they transfer to and complete their bachelor’s
degrees at the nation’s top four-year colleges and
universities.
Applicable Majors:
All
Eligibility:
applicants must have achieved a
cumulative college grade-point average of 3.50 or better
on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) and plan to transfer
to a four-year college; sophomore status
Award:
$30,000 annually

James A. Finnegan
Foundation
The Finnegan Foundation provides
practical training in government and politics for
undergraduates by offering a ten-week paid internship in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania over the summer break.

James Madison Memorial
Fellowship
The James Madison Memorial Foundation
awards Junior Fellowships to students who are about to
complete, or have recently completed, their
undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate
work on a full-time basis. Junior Fellows have two years
to complete their degree. Fellowship recipients must
enter a master’s program that prepares them to become
full-time secondary education social studies teachers.
Applicable Majors:
Be a teacher, or plan to become a
teacher, of American history, American government, or
social studies at the secondary school level
Eligibility:
Possess a bachelor’s degree or plan to receive a
bachelor’s degree no later than August 31 of the year in
which you are applying.
Award: The
maximum amount of each award is $24,000, prorated over
the individual period of study

Marshall Scholarship
Marshall Scholarships support students
graduating from US universities to complete graduate
degree programs at any university in the United
Kingdoms. Support is comprehensive and generally lasts
for two academic years, though an additional year can be
obtained. Students selected for this scholarship
represent “potential leaders, opinion-formers and
decision-makers” of the United States.
Applicable Majors:
Any field of study
Eligibility:
(by the time they take up their
scholarship ie September 2010) hold their first
undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year
college or university in the United States; have
obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (or
A-) on their undergraduate degree.
Award: All
expenses related to study in the UK for two years

Mellon Fellowship
The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in
Humanistic Studies are designed to support students who
show exceptional promise as future teachers and scholars
in humanistic disciplines.
Applicable Majors:
English, History, Music, Philosophy,
Political Science, Women’s studies, etc.
Eligibility:
Graduating Seniors
Award:
Around 85 fellowships are available. The fellowship
covers full graduate tuition and required fees for the
first year of graduate study and includes a stipend of
$17,500.

National Security
Education Program (NSEP)
NSEP scholarship provide US
undergraduates with generous financial support to both
study abroad and to learn languages of less commonly
studied countries. The goal of the program is to advance
the competencies of US citizens with respect to cultures
and countries that are less often studies.
Applicable Majors:
Any field of study
Eligibility: A
high school graduate, or have earned a GED, and are
matriculated in an undergraduate degree program in a
U.S. post-secondary institution; Applying to engage in a
study abroad experience in a country outside of Western
Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that meets
home institution standards
Award: up to
$20,000 towards your study abroad experience

Pennsylvania House of
Representatives Legislative Fellowships
This is a 13-week paid internship at the
State Capitol in Harrisburg. It can be a valuable
experience for students of any field of study or
interest. It is sponsored by the leadership of the
Pennsylvania House of Representatives, through the
Bipartisan Management Committee.
Applicable Majors:
Any field of study
Eligibility:
college seniors and second semester juniors from all
Pennsylvania colleges and universities
Award: A
bi-weekly stipend of $750 is provided. The fellowship
is considered full-time

The deadline dates are the first Friday
in May for the Fall semester and the first Friday in
October for the Spring semester

Truman Scholarships
The Truman Scholarship provides up to
$30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees
in public service fields. Students must be college
juniors at the time of selection. The Foundation also
provides assistance with career counseling, internship
placement, graduate school admissions, and professional
development. Scholars are invited to participate in a
number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The
Summer Institute, The Truman Fellows Program, and the
Public Service Law Conference

required to work in public service for
three of the seven years following completion of a
Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition
of receiving Truman funds.
