Sorority Life at Lock Haven

The Greek community at Lock Haven has a long, rich tradition of fostering student involvement and development. Since 1921, students have chosen to become members of fraternities and sororities because of the opportunities and experiences these organizations provide. The Greek-letter societies were founded on the ideals of scholarship, community service, leadership and life-long friendship. Lock Haven University’s fraternities and sororities continue to not only uphold these ideals, but strive to reach excellence within each of them.

Lock Haven University proudly hosts the following  Sororities and Fraternities:

Sororities

  • Alpha Sigma Tau
  • Zeta Tau Alpha
  • Sigma Kappa
  • Sigma Sigma Sigma

Fraternities

  • Alpha Sigma Phi

Scholarship:

All members of Greek organizations are students, first and foremost. Academics are emphasized by all fraternity and sorority chapters, from new member education through graduation. All chapters have grade point average minimums required for membership and to remain active. Organizations provide scholastic assistance such as tutoring, awards, study sessions and incentives such as scholarships, to challenge members to reach their full academic potential. Fraternity and sorority members strive to be above the all undergraduate grade point average each semester. National trends prove that Greek members stay in college and are more likely to obtain a degree than non-Greek students.

Community Service:

Greek chapters provide members with the opportunity to become involved in giving back to the community through service (participation in an activity to directly help others) and philanthropies (raising money or goods for charitable groups). Annually Lock Haven Greeks raise thousands of dollars for local and national charities, as well as dedicate thousands of hours of volunteer time. From mentoring junior high school students, to giving blood, to raising money for charities such as the American Red Cross or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Lock Haven 's fraternities and sororities are lending a helping hand.

Leadership:

The Greek community at Lock Haven is proud of the numerous leadership development opportunities it provides for students. Within each chapter, members assume leadership positions to assist with membership and growth. There are also Greek students represented in almost every campus organization, including honor societies, intramurals, governing bodies, cultural groups, creative and performing arts, leadership and community service groups. As a Greek member, students participate in larger governing councils and additional leadership opportunities, such as the Interfraternity Council, and Panhellenic Council.

Additionally, individuals have the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to academic excellence, service, Greek and campus involvement. This can occur through the Order of Omega National Honor Society (Greek leadership honor society), Rho Lambda National Honor Society (Panhellenic Council scholastic honorary), and regional or national conventions.

Friendship:

Lock Haven University continues to grow with more students each year. Greek Life provides students the chance to make a growing campus feel a little smaller by connecting members in the Greek community. When joining a fraternity or sorority, individuals are seeking an experience where they share similar values and interests with the members. Each chapter serves as a place where strong relationships are created and friendships last a life-time.

The Greek community also provides a wide variety of events which help bring members of all groups together, whether through intramural sports, Greek Week, social events, educational workshops or speakers, retreats, ‘founders' weeks, or philanthropies. For many students, the extracurricular involvement provides a more fulfilling collegiate experience.

A fraternity or sorority can personalize your college experience by offering an academic support system, hands-on leadership opportunities, interact with faculty and administrators, networking through educational programs and interactions with alumni, community service involvement, and close friendships with classmates that foster brother and sisterhood.

Lock Haven is home to ten fraternities and sororities. All chapters are alike in their values and missions, but uniquely different in the chapters' members that create that special bond each group has. Listed here are the chapters currently active on campus. Please visit their local and national websites to obtain further information regarding their organizations.
