The University of Zagreb, Croatia
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TEACHING FACT SHEET

The Location
Elle magazine recently called Zagreb the most beautiful city east of Paris.  Although this may be a slight exaggeration, few cities are so beautifully situated and boast such an impressive cultural heritage.  There are more museums per square foot in Zagreb than any other city in the world.

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, one of Europe's youngest countries - a parliamentary democracy that adopted its constitution in 1990 and was internationally recognized in 1992.  It is geographically, culturally and historically in the very heart of Europe.    The city is divided into three parts: the thousand-year old upper town (Gornji grad) which contains the Presidential Palace, the historic church of St. Mark's, the Croatian parliament, and museums and galleries which are all set in cobbled streets lit by gas lamps; the 19th century lower town (Dolnji grad) with its shops, restaurants, cafes, theatres, parks; and the modern post-war (WWII) part of Zagreb (Novi Zagreb).  The city’s charm and sophistication will embrace you.

The University
The University of Zagreb houses some forty graduate and undergraduate schools and over 40,000 students. Its first secular school was set up in the mid - fourteenth century. The first secondary school was established at the beginning of the sixteenth century, and the University opened its doors in the second half of that same century. Naturally, a city with so many young people is very sports- oriented - it has excellent sporting facilities and boasts of many European and world champions.  LHUP works closely with the Department of English in Zagreb University’s Faculty of Philosophy in setting up the student teaching placements.  Students are placed in one of three schools in the city:  The IV Gimnazija, a state supported secondary school; Zagreb’s International Baccalaureate School (XV Gimnazija, for middle and secondary school students); and the Matija Gubec Primary School, another state supported school which is housed in a modern facility build in the early 1990s.

The TeachingPlacement
The University of Zagreb can accommodate those student teachers majoring in early childhood, elementary, secondary and health and physical education.  Placements – 7 weeks in duration – are made by university officials at the school to ensure the quality and the appropriateness of the assignment.  The language of instruction for all student teachers is English.  A faculty member from the University of Zagreb conducts periodic visits to the placement school for formal observation and assessment of the performance of the student teacher.  At the conclusion of the placement, University of Zagreb officials submit a final assessment report to the LHUP student teaching supervisor.

Housing
Students are housed with Croatian families and receive two meals per day (breakfast and dinner) during the week and three meals per day on weekends.    Prices, at current exchange rates, are approximately $500/month.  Student teachers will be billed by LHUP’s Institute for International Studies and will forward said fees to the University of Zagreb.  The University of Zagreb is in charge of making the housing placement.

Tuition and Fees
LHU students continue to pay LHUP tuition and fees while student teaching in Zagreb.  Students are billed for tuition and fees – plus an additional $150 international services fee -- by LHUP’s Bursar’s Office.  A breakdown of additional costs to be paid to the Institute for International Studies follows:

$1000 flat fee that corresponds to the cost of on-site supervision by officials from the University of Zagreb.  Students will be billed by the Institute for International Studies.

Health Insurance
All students are required to carry documented evidence of having obtained an international health insurance policy that will provide them with the minimum coverage required by law.  Information on international health insurance providers can be obtained from the Institute for International Studies.  You may find that the coverage of your present health insurance carrier includes overseas travel/study.  It is important, however, that your carrier provide written verification of such coverage.

So, How do I get Started?
Simply come by the Institute for International Studies to pick up an application form.  It is also important that you meet with the Director of Student Teaching early on. Remember, the deadline for application for the fall term is February 15 and for the spring term is September 15.  A $50 application fee is required.  If accepted to the program, this fee will be deducted from your tuition costs.
