-
What is the definition of an Internship?
An internship is defined as any off-campus
program for which college credit is awarded
which serves as a vehicle for providing adjunct
practical experience related to on-going
professional development at Lock Haven
University. This excludes established university
courses. (from Lock Haven University’s
Internship Memorandum of Agreement)
-
How many credits can students receive for an
internship?
Students may apply for a total of 15 semester
hours credit for internship experience. This
credit may be taken in one semester or more than
one semester; however, the total amount of
internship credit may not exceed 15 semester
hours. Nor more than 9 credits of internship can
be counted towards the student’s major.
Internship credits beyond 9, not to exceed 15
total credits, will be applied to the student’s
general education requirements. Departments can
decide to allow less than 9 credits of
internship to count towards the major, but they
cannot decide to allow more than 9.
-
How are students graded?
Only internship credit that will be applied to
the general education free elective category can
be graded as pass/fail; all others must be
graded as a letter grade or credit/nocredit.
Internship credits beyond 9 can only be taken on
a credit/no credit basis.
-
When can students do an internship?
Students must have 60 semester hours credit
before becoming eligible for an internship.
Additional credit hour requirement may be
imposed by individual departments. Students must
have a QPA of 2.5 in their major and must have a
minimum of QPA of 2.5 overall.
-
What is the Internship Memorandum of Agreement?
When should it be completed?
It is a document that defines the internship
program at Lock Haven University. All people
listed on the document should sign it before the
internship begins and no later than 10 days into
the semester.
-
How often must the supervising faculty member
make contact with the internship on-site
supervisor?
A minimum of two phone calls or one visit to the
site is defined as appropriate consultation.
-
Who develops the intern’s description of
responsibilities?
The faculty supervisor along with the on-site
supervisor must develop and write a detailed
pre-internship description of the internship
responsibilities before the internship
commences.
-
What is the role of the Internship Coordinator
and Career Services?
The Internship Coordinator develops internship
sites for students and promotes the value of
internships. The Coordinator works with faculty
to develop and promote internships. Career
Services Office acts as a clearinghouse for
information on internships for students and
faculty. Career Services also is a resource for
tools often needed to secure an internship, such
