Checklist for Getting Started

  • Contact your faculty supervisor to determine your eligibility (prerequisites completed, grade point average in major and overall GPA, other requirements, etc.).

  • Complete the Student Interest Form. Identify your skills, define your career goals, think about when and where you would like to do our internship, and determine what you want to gain from an internship.

  • Meet with the Internship Coordinator. The Coordinator can guide you to resources in your field to help you locate an internship, assist you in defining your internship goals, and refer you to other resources, as needed. Email Anita Casper, Internship Coordinator.

  • If you plan to use financial aid, contact the Financial Aid Office for assistance.  Complete your FAFSA form as early as possible! Also, find out if you are eligible for PHEAA-funded internships. Note this is not the same as PHEAA grant eligible.

  • Complete your resume and cover letter.  Career Services will assist you in developing a resume and cover letter, and doing a mock interview.  Once you are satisfied, you are ready to apply for internship opportunities.

  • Find an internship site. Talk to faculty, students, family and friends about internship possibilities. Research sites to determine the availability of internships and contact persons. See How to Create Your Own Internship for tips on contacting agencies. Once you have secured a site, discuss this with your faculty advisor. NOTE: Some departments identify sites and place students rather than students finding internships on their own.  Please check with your advisor.

  • Finalize arrangements. Agree on start and end dates, how many hours per week or semester you will work, and what duties and responsibilities are expected.

  • Complete the Internship Memorandum of Agreement; obtain approvals. Obtain the following signatures: Advisor, Supervising Faculty Member, Department Chairperson, Academic Dean, and Vice President of Academic Affairs.  Once the internship is approved the Memorandum form is sent to the Registrars Office and the internship course(s) are added to your schedule.

Next Steps…

  • Complete the internship and all assignments and evaluations as outlined by the department, and receive a grade from your supervising faculty member.
