FAQ's for Parents
-
When can my student do an internship?
Students may do an internship for academic
credit once they have 60 credits and a
cumulative GPA, as well as GPA in their major,
of at least 2.5. Some academic departments may
have additional requirements.
-
Where are internships found?
Internships can be done at any business or
organization that has a defined need for an
intern and can provide a learning experience for
the student. The academic department will need
to determine if the site and position qualify as
an internship experience.
-
Should an internship be done in a particular
semester?
Internships can be arranged during the fall or
spring semesters, or summer sessions.
Occasionally an internship is done during the
winter break.
-
How long are internships?
Generally internships last a semester, but that
varies depending on the academic department.
Some internships are full-time experiences,
others can be part-time while a student attends
classes at the university.
-
Are internships paid?
Some internships are paid and others are
non-paid experiences. Many very good internships
are unpaid. Unpaid internships can provide
great contacts in the field, lead to a future
job, or provide wonderful professional
experiences that are great resume-builders.
Unpaid internships are generally part-time
allowing the student the opportunity to work
part-time if necessary.
