Working with Students

Faculty members are probably the first to respond to students’ questions about internships. You have experience in the field and may have many professional contacts. In some academic departments, faculty place students at internship sites. In other departments, faculty have lists, share information and sometimes guide students in a direction, based on their knowledge of the student.

The Internship Coordinator, housed in the Career Services Office, is available to help faculty and students find appropriate internship sites and to assist students in understanding the internship process.

The following faculty responsibilities are from LHU’s Internship Memorandum of Agreement :

  • The faculty supervisor, in conjunction with the on-site supervisor, must develop and write a detailed pre-internship description of the internship responsibilities before the internship commences.

  • Assist students in determining number of credits for internship; whether credits will be taken for pass/fail, letter grade or credit/no credit; and if credits will be counted toward the student’s major or general education requirements .

  • Assist students in completing the Internship Memorandum of Agreement

  • Monitor and evaluate the student’s work through a minimum of two phone calls or one work site visit.

  • Assign a letter grade, pass/fail, or credit/no credit, for the internship.
