Subject: 1 November 2011 Physics Club Minutes November 1, 2011 The Physics Club met in Ulmer 222 at 12:15. The club noted that there will be a demo show this Friday at 12:30PM. There will be a practice for other upcoming demo shows next Monday at 9PM. After discussing the shows, Dr. Cullin began his presentation on thorium energy. Dr. Cullin told the group that thorium energy, a type of nuclear energy, could be a safer and more abundant supply of energy than current nuclear fuels while holding many advantages over other types of energy as well. He then discussed some information about how liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTRs) worked and the advantages of those reactors. Afterwards, he detailed many of the reasons why thorium energy is currently not in wide use, starting from political affairs in the 1970s and ending on the fear of nuclear energy that is prevalent in today’s society. In closing, we watched the first five minutes of a video discussing thorium energy.
