Prof. Kevin Range
CHEM321: Physical Chemistry II
This document should give you some more guidance about writing up your first Pchem II lab report.
What did you do? How did you do it? What answer did you get?
Why did you do what you did? What is the basis for your experiment? In the case of this particular lab report this section can be quite short. Just touch on the major points, i.e., Planck's constant is important because..., we can measure it the way we did because..., etc.
How exactly did you do what you did? There needs to be enough detail here that you feel another student could come in and perform the experiment on their own.
Show your data. Tables and graphs are key here, and should be publication quality. What does ``publication quality'' mean? Browse through the literature at http://pubs.acs.org and find some papers with tables and/or graphs. Make your tables and graph look like that.
This section may be combined with Results if that make the paper flow better. Here you analyze your results.
Self-explanatory. Summarize in a paragraph or two how things turned out and include any further work that may be indicated by your results.
