Chemistry 316 Quantitative Analysis
Course Information and Lecture Outline
Philosophy of Quantitative Analysis
Quantitative Analysis deals with laboratory methods to measure the concentration of the components of a sample. The course includes "wet methods" ( volumetric and gravimetric determinations) and potentiometric methods. The experiments chosen involve environmental and everyday substances.
Materials that you will need for the course:
Textbook: Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry by Douglas Skoog, Donald West, James Holler, and Stanley Crouch, 8th Edition. The ISBN is 0-03-035523-0.
(Beware of other editions and beware of yet another book with a similar title by the same authors! )
Calculator: a calculator capable of doing logarithms is a must; statistical calculations are desireable. You will need your calculator in lecture on most days.
Lab: A composition notebook with bound pages; YOU DO NOT NEED to buy an expensive one with carbon pages or numbered pages; cheap is better!
Eye protection: Visor-Gogs or glasses from the Chemistry Club sales are acceptable; others need to be approved by Dr. Rublein. Please note that the Visor-Gogs have better protection from splashes from the side and the brow-bar keeps splashes from dripping down on your face or eyes.
Dishwashing gloves are recommended.
