On September 11th, when Central Normal played and won its first organized baseball game. Nine years later, baseball began to be considered a significant aspect of Central Normal and accordingly, the team received updated equipment and a new baseball field. This was a large improvement considering the fact that the baseball team started with only four bats and ragged makeshift uniforms that consisted of canvas shoes and dress ties!

Fourteen years later in 1900, Central Normal fielded its first official football team. Prior to 1900, football had been largely operated by the student body. The first official win-loss record of the team was one win and one loss. Since the team had difficulty acquiring funds for uniforms and equipment, play was delayed and unfortunately only two opportunities to compete were available. Originally known as the Central Normal Raiders, they won their first Teachers College Football Championship of Pennsylvania in 1930, finishing the season with a flawless seven wins, no losses record.

On June 30, 1887, the school's second principle, George P. Beard, was dismissed without notice in part due to his insistence that the school be a religious one. Although both students and alumni appealed on his behalf, his dismissal was final.
