Lock Haven State Teachers College becomes Lock Haven State College. This marks the second time in a thirty-three year period that the name of the institution is changed.

Two years later, Lock Haven State College is authorized to offer a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in something other than education.

In 1960, a new residence hall, named after former math teacher, Samuel J. Smith, was constructed. The building was dedicated on Alumni Day, May 21, 1960.
