In 1974, Lock Haven State College received a special mission to spearhead international programming for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  The result was the creation of the Institute for International Studies.

Twenty-nine years later, the Institute for International Studies now coordinates exchange programs with twenty-five schools in twenty-one different countries. It also publishes the Lock Haven International Review, organizes the International Visiting Lecturer Series, and plays an important role in recruitment of full-time international students.
