Newspapers, Wire Services, etc.

Depending on the type of project you are working on, articles found in the press can be valuable primary sources of information. To help you locate items in local, national, and international newspapers, newswires, and other information services, we suggest the following:

Newsbank
Newsbank offers full-text access to hundreds of US newspapers. These include many Pennsylvania-based publications such as “The Centre Daily Times” ( University Park), “The Patriot News” ( Harrisburg), “The Philadelphia Inquirer,” “The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,” and others.

Check out this link for a complete listing of sources found in Newsbank: http://infoweb.newsbank.com/sources/NFIW702.pdf

Also, Newsbank provides access to:

The quickest way to access Newsbank is via the Stevenson Library Homepage (http://www.lhup.edu/library/). Click on the “Fast Links” drop-down menu on the right side of the screen, then highlight “Newsbank” to go directly to the search page.

LexisNexis
LexisNexis allows full-text searching of hundreds of press publications. You will find here major newspapers such as "The New York Times,” "The Washington Post,” "The Chicago Sun-Times," and others. You can also find foreign newspapers, including “The Guardian” ( London), “The Moscow Times,” and a wide range of publications from across the globe. Try the “Quick News Search” option for an instant glance at articles dealing with your topic. To define your search in more detail, use the “Guided News Search.”

LexisNexis also provides information on court cases and companies (US- and internationally-based). Search here for up-to-date data such as verdicts and company profiles.

Example: Information can be found on the court proceedings of Richard Hickock (one of the accused parties in the murder case inspiring Capote's "In Cold Blood"). A search on the "Get a Case" option of the Lexis-Nexis default page, using the terms "Hickock" and "Kansas" (the state where the murders took place and the accused subsequently tried) yields the following results:

1. Hickock v. Crouse, Nos. 7605, 7606, UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS TENTH CIRCUIT, 334 F.2d 95; 1964 U.S. App. LEXIS 4826, July 1, 1964
2. Hickock v. Hand, No. 42,970, Supreme Court of Kansas, 190 Kan. 224; 373 P.2d 206; 1962 Kan. LEXIS 377, July 7, 1962, Opinion Filed
