Grove Dictionary of Art

One of the most comprehensive dictionaries on art in the world, Grove is more an encyclopedia than a dictionary. Contains biographies on artists and architects, with a bibliography supplied at the end of each entry. Includes entries on architecture, photography, decorative arts, painting, sculpture, performance art, and multimedia installations. Art periods are also described.

Divided into articles of three major categories: historical, dealing with the great cycles of art civilization or more circumscribed phenomena of individual cultures, schools, groups, etc.; conceptual and systematic, studying general problems of art from the viewpoint of theory or methodology, recurring attitudes and phenomena, etc.; and geographic, differentiated from the historical by their documentary nature.
