Grove Dictionary of Art

One of the most comprehensive dictionaries on art in the world, Grove is more an encyclopedia than a dictionary. Contains biographies on artists and architects, with a bibliography supplied at the end of each entry. Includes entries on architecture, photography, decorative arts, painting, sculpture, performance art, and multimedia installations. Art periods are also described.

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of World Art

Divided into articles of three major categories: historical, dealing with the great cycles of art civilization or more circumscribed phenomena of individual cultures, schools, groups, etc.; conceptual and systematic, studying general problems of art from the viewpoint of theory or methodology, recurring attitudes and phenomena, etc.; and geographic, differentiated from the historical by their documentary nature. Articles include bibliography, some illustrations.
