 |
| |
(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Rob
Battisson (Leicester, England/High Wyland),
a junior men’s soccer player for Lock Haven University of
Pennsylvania, has been named to the 2001 Academic All America
team. He was also recently recognized as a Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) Fall Top Ten award winner.
Battisson
joins fellow Haven players Rob Eaton, Chris Penny and Mark Waite
to the highest academic level that the sport highlights.
The
PSAC Top Ten awards recognize five male and five female
student-athletes from the PSAC who distinguish themselves in the
classroom, as well as in the arena of competition.
The conference designates Top Ten Award winners after each
of the competitive sports seasons, fall, winter and spring.
Battisson is a junior member of the Bald Eagle soccer team,
serving as a two-year starter at center midfield.
An English major with a concentration in literature, he has
established a 3.99 grade point average over his two and a half
years at Lock Haven. A
two-time first-team All-PSAC player, Battisson helped Lock Haven
to a 12-5-1 overall record this season scoring one goal and three
assists. This season
he was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District First
Team, and has been a PSAC Scholar-Athlete the past two years.
This is his first PSAC Top Ten honor.
To
be a candidate for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have
achieved a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and be
a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
Only student-athletes from the Fall sports season are
eligible for the Fall Top Ten Awards.
Those sports include cross country, field hockey, football,
men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball.
The
Top Ten Awards provide the PSAC an extra tier in the recognition
of the top student-athletes on all PSAC squads with 3.25
cumulative GPA's or better. Additionally,
the Top Ten award winners are added to the ballot for the top Male
and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards named by the PSAC
following the conclusion of the academic year.
Other 2001 Fall Top Ten award winners include: Lisa Bray (Sr.,
Field Hockey, Mansfield), Alex Daecher (Sr., Football, Kutztown),
Laura Hall (Jr., Volleyball, Indiana), Scott McDavid (Sr., Soccer,
California), Kamar Samuels (So., Soccer, E. Stroudsburg), Megan
Seefeldt (Sr., Cross Country, Kutztown), Mark Stallings (Jr.,

The Bald Eagle
soccer team was victorious in both games this week, earning shutout wins
over Slippery Rock and C.W. Post to improve its record to 11-3-1 overall
and 3-2-1 in the PSAC.
The Bald Eagles garnered
a 2-0 victory over PSAC opponent Slippery Rock University Wednesday at
Central Mountain High School’s McGill Field.
Lock Haven’s David
Dallas volleyed into the back of the net from close range with time
draining off the clock in the first half after John Schumann had
sent in a powerful low cross following a great run down the right flank
to give LHU the 1-0 halftime lead. In the 55th minute, Adam Munro received
the ball just past midfield from Gjermund Mathisen and drove a
screaming shot to the top left corner of the net from 35 yards out.
Lock Haven’s goalkeeper
Ryan Swailes posted two saves and picked up his second career
shutout. SRU’s James Caleo recorded four saves with two goals
allowed.
The #16 Bald
Eagles utilized a strong second half to put away C.W. Post, 5-0, in
non-conference action Saturday afternoon on McCollum Field. Rookie
forward Andrew Battersby and senior midfielder Richard
Melchior both pocketed a pair of goals to lead The Haven team to
victory.
Battersby got behind an
indirect free kick from Adam Munro and sent it through to the
back of the net in the game’s 15th minute to put the Bald Eagles on
the board with the 1-0 lead. LHU held the one-goal lead through to the
middle of the second half, when Nick Apostolou crossed to David
Dallas who beat the keeper for the score.
A penalty kick awarded to
the Bald Eagles in the 80th minute set off a three-goal surge in a six
minute period. Battersby booted the penalty kick into the bottom right
corner of the goal to give LHU the 3-0 cushion. Four minutes later, Rob
Battisson took advantage of offensive miscommunication by C.W. Post
on an indirect kick, carrying the ball downfield and passing to Richard
Melchior, who completed the fast break play with a score to the back
left post. Melchior scored again two minutes later, receiving an short
cross from Apostolou and burying it to bring LHU’s final margin of
victory to 5-0.
LHU netminder Ryan
Swailes spent 79 minutes in goal, recording four saves, while Jake
Lezak took over for the game’s remaining 11 minutes, also tallying
one save. C.W. Post keeper Jesse Montero spent all 90 minutes in goal,
recording three saves.

The Bald Eagle soccer team went 1-1 this week, defeating Shippensburg
University, 1-0, before dropping their game with East Stroudsburg, 2-1.
On
Tuesday, the Bald Eagles won possession at midfield and Richard
Melchior played a ball left to Nick Apostolou, who took
advantage, slicing the ball into the back of the net to lift Lock Haven
over Shippensburg University, 1-0, in conference action this afternoon.
Apostolou’s
goal in the eighth minute put the Bald Eagles on top early and gave them a
lead that would stand after the close of 90 minutes. Some near misses, a
little luck (two LHU shots banging off of the top cross bar), and standout
play by both keepers kept the scoring to the minimum despite 12 looks at
the goal by Lock Haven and 10 by Shippensburg.
Shippensburg
keeper Bob McComsey posted three saves in goal, while Lock Haven
goalie Paul Maguire tallied four saves.
The East Stroudsburg Warriors defeated the Bald Eagles, 2-1, in a dramatic
match-up on Saturday.
The Bald
Eagles started off strong, scoring in the first minute of play off the
foot of Andrew Battersby, who was assisted by John Shumann .
ESU’s Ahmet Kose evened the score later in the first half to tie
it at one all.
After a
dry spell full of tough defensive play, ESU took control of the second
half as Warrior Tom Mustac scored the game winning goal in the 58th
minute.
LHU
keeper Paul Maguire posted seven saves and gave up two goals in the
effort, while ESU’s Jason Land tallied two saves with one goal
given.

The #5 Bald Eagle soccer team went 1-1 this week, defeating Millersville
University , 2-0, before dropping their first game of the season, a 3-0
loss to Kutztown University. LHU's seven-game win streak was the
longest in Haven history since the 1983 team strung together 10
consecutive victories.
Last Wednesday, the
Bald Eagles bettered PSAC opponent Millersville University, 2-0, to record
their 6th shutout in seven games and their first conference victory of the
season.
Freshman
forward Nick Apostolou (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) gave LHU the
one-goal cushion in the first minute of play, scoring his first collegiate
goal off a two-on-one break assisted by Andrew Battersby (Rotherham,
England/Rotherham). It would not be until midway through the second
half when LHU found the back of the net again, this time off a goal by
sophomore Graham Boyle (Paisley, Scotland/Paisley). Boyle volleyed
a cross from David Dallas (Wilmington, Del./Concord) from the edge
of the 18 yard box and into the net for the Haven’s second score.
On Saturday, the Kutztown Golden Bears spirited away a 3-0 win from the
Bald Eagles, putting together the string of goals within a five minute
period in the second half for the victory.
The first half was a
defensive battle, with only four shots on goal recorded (LHU - 3 shots, KU
- 1 shot). Midway through the final half, KU’s Tim McCusker (Blake
Stoveken assist) found the back of the net to open the Golden Bear
scoring drive. Just two minutes later, Shawn Rennie added another
tally to the scoreboard for Kutztown. KU’s John Lapore wrapped up
Golden Bear scoring in the 71st minute.

*PSAC contest
After the recent events, only one men's soccer game was played this week,
a Saturday contest against Wilmington College. Freshman forward Andrew
Battersby (Rotherham, England/Rotherham) pocketed a pair of scores to
lead #5 Lock Haven past Wilmington College on LHU’s McCollum Field. The
Bald Eagles protect their unblemished record, improving to 6-0 on the
season.
The Bald Eagles
held a 13-2 shot advantage after the first half, but met up with some big
plays by the Wilmington defense and goalie Bryan Rudden and entered
hafltime knotted in a scoreless tie. In the 56th minute, LHU’s Battersby
found himself breaking towards the goal with a defender tight on his back
and an empty net, but missed by less than an inch, clipping the cross bar.
He would redeem
himself on a fast break play in the 72nd minute, however, as Graham
Boyle (Paisley, Scotland/Paisley) crossed the ball deep left to
Battersby who sent the ball into the goal. Just a minute and a half later
and on the attack again, Battersby created enough space to receive another
cross from Nick Apostolou (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and
buried it into the back of the net to give LHU the 2-0 lead.
Wildcat keeper Bryan
Rudden posted 16 saves on the game, while Haven keeper Paul Maguire
(Great Falls, Va./St. John’s) saw little action on his end of the
field, facing only three shots on goal.
