Education - Secondary Education

The secondary education degree and certification program will prepare you to teach in middle schools and high schools, grades 7-12. You will major in your chosen area of study within its own department, where you will gain the knowledge to effectively teach your subject area. You may choose one of the following concentrations:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth & Space Science
  • General Science
  • Physics
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies

The Secondary Education program includes numerous field experiences integrated into the coursework, two "blocks" of courses in pedagogy, two subject-specific teaching methods courses, and a semester-long student teaching internship.

Student Teaching

Student teaching is typically divided into two seven- week assignments, one in a junior/middle school and one in a high school. Most assignments are within a 50-60 mile radius of the LHU campus, but some students opt to student teach abroad.

Senior Portfolio

To enhance your marketability for employment after graduation or for acceptance into graduate school, you will develop a digital developing portfolio at the end of your junior year and a professional portfolio during your senior year which describes your field experiences and teaching accomplishments and credentials. This not only demonstrates your academic abilities and experiences, but also highlights your expertise in using instructional technology.
