| THEATRE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Graduates with a
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theatre Arts find jobs in various aspects of theatrical
field: design, technical production, casting, marketing, performance and arts
administration. Additionally, graduates may find opportunities in related fields such as
broadcasting, film, music and arts education. Many of our graduates continue their
education in an M.A. or M.F.A. graduate program or as an apprentice or intern with a
professional theatre company.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts combines a liberal
arts background with practical theatre production experience. You will study dramatic
theory and forms of theatrical productions from a historical and contemporary approach. In
addition to studying acting techniques, scenic, lighting, costume and stage makeup design,
you will have opportunities in Creative Dramatics, Directing and Children's Theatre. The
academic program is coupled with the practical experience component allowing the student
to gain hands-on experience in all of the collaborative roles associated with a theatre
production.
Co-curricular activities include University Players, the student drama organization,
which collaborates with the department to produce two to three main stage productions and
two to four studio productions each academic year. An official chapter of Alpha Psi Omega,
the national honorary theater fraternity, is on campus. The community offers a
professional, summer stock theatre. The Millbrook Playhouse, where faculty and students
have had opportunity to work. Incoming freshmen with a talent in theatre are eligible for
the Bonnie K. Franz Scholarships. Internships can be customized to meet student goals.
FACULTY: Our Theatre Department faculty bring years of teaching and practical
experience to Lock Haven University. The department is a department of Speech
Communication and Theatre faculty. Three-quarters of the instructors hold doctorate
degrees, while the others hold Master of Fine Arts degrees. From directing and producing
theatrical productions to staying abreast of the latest in stage and costume design
techniques, our faculty not only teach, but also remain involved in both the professional
and academic theatre. The department faculty's recent activities include international
exchanges with Poland, China and Mexico, as well as publishing in theatre journals. They
are involved in organizations, including the Speech Communication Association, American
Association of Theatre in Higher Education, International Alliance of Theatre Stage Hands
Union, American Association of Theatre in Higher Education and the East Coast Theatre
Conference.
FACILITIES: Lock Haven University offers one of the finest theatre departments
in the Northeast. The Sloan Theatre, a 300 seat, full fly system, proscenium theatre,
houses a state of the art computerized lighting system and new digital sound system. The
theatre also supports a completely modernized equipped scenic and costume shops.
Additionally, this facility houses comfortable makeup and dressing room areas. The Speech
Communication and Theatre Department also operates a second theatre space - The Countdown
Theatre. This flexible black box theatre houses a brand new computerized lighting system
and is home to our Studio Season. Additionally, Price Performance Center, a 500 seat
proscenium theatre, provides an excellent facility for many of the Music Departments
events and touring events.
In addition, the Speech Communication and Theatre Department maintains an extensive,
in-house library containing more than 1800 play scripts, audios and videos. Our costume
department houses a collection of 150 historical garments.
