In the Spring of 2008 the Art of the Natural World held its first exhibit. The title for the first year was “Geology: Materials of the Earth As Seen In Art ”, which presented the natural world from a geological perspective. This first year was met with great success as over one-hundred local school students, their faculty, and members of the community attended this event.

This event was presented in the form of an art gallery much like the years to follow. Lock Haven University students acted as docent tour guides for the visitors of the event. The attendees viewed rocks, minerals, and other materials of the earth in the form of sculptures. This exhibit explored landscapes, geologic features and natural resources as objects of beauty and interest as well as objects of scientific study. The array of artwork illustrated the vibrant color, luster and optical properties of minerals and precious metals and the unique form and texture of rock.

Along with an artist description of each piece, the show included an educational scientific description of the origin and occurrence of these geologic materials. Local school children visiting the exhibit made rock sculptures for their hands-on learning activity.
