Organize Sports Tournament for Andrew's Special Kids Dr. Batty with some of her students who planned the ASK Special event Last year, Recreation Management professor Dr. Kimberly Batty gave the students in her Program Planning and Design class the opportunity to create and operate a fundraiser event for Dean Kriebel, his wife Amy, and their son Andrew, who has Angelman's Syndrome.
The students planned, implemented, and managed the entire event at the Recreation Center and ended up raising $380 in its first year and $475 during the second year in their efforts. Lock Haven students, brothers of the social fraternities, faculty, and staff volunteered and took part in the cause by attending the event and donating a small fee. All the money raised from the event was given to the Andrew's Special Kid's Foundation (ASK), which was founded in 2004, has raised over $125,000 since then. Andrew's Special Kids Foundation (ASK)
The Kriebel family started Andrew's Special Kids Foundation (ASK) in honor of their son Andrew who was diagnosed with Angleman's syndrome at an early age. The non-profit organization helps kids with disabilities obtain necessary equipment and financial assistance. The ASK Foundation's mission is, "To provide special needs children with every opportunity in life, which will enable them to reach their full potential by providing them with adaptive equipment, special education opportunities, safety equipment, therapies, and financial assistance for out of state travel." What YOU can Gain! Many of you might be asking yourself, what can I gain from this? Well that's easy, being a student in the Recreation Management program can offer many opportunities that may never be offered again in your few short years of college. Having the opportunity to change one's life while learning how to plan a special event is very beneficial. It gives you the chance to increase your knowledge in planning, leading others, and evalutating programs. This experience not only helped children with disabilities but also capitalized on learning through real life experiences. Don't be afraid to help change a life and extend your education!
