LHU Students Making a Difference in the Lives of Children with Disabilities

"Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people - your family, friends, and coworkers, and even strangers you meet along the way. "  -  Ted Deljanovan

How Can You Make A Difference?

The students of HPED312: Adapted Physical Education make a difference in lives of children with disablities every week.  Once a week the students meet with the children in the Zimmerli gyms and pool to provide the children with much needed physical activity, and help them focus towards improving motor skills, aquatic skills, health related physical fitness, and just to HAVE FUN.  But wait, you do not need to be a student of HPED 312 to be involved.  Each semester many students volunteer by assisting the students, and participating in activity with the children.  Many volunteer to gain the experience, but many stay just for the fun.  To these students the highlight of the week is to see smiles on the children's faces, and to see how much they truely enjoy the activity time.

Quotes by Dr. Brett Everhart

"Lock Haven University's HPE Adapted Physical Education Motor Skill / Aquatics Instructional Lab is designed for providing practical teaching experience for senior Health and Physical Education majors prior to student teaching.  This weekly practicum is offered each semester as a part of HPED 312 Adapted Physical Education and it impacts the LHU majors as well as the K-12 students with disabilities who come to us each week from Keystone Central School District schools.  Our HPE majors become more and more comfortable working with various types of disabilites as a part of the practical experience and will hopefully be able to impact many, many students with and without disablilities in the future. "

"I am so appreciative of the Life Skills teachers from KCSD who allow us to work with their students.   I have watched so many of these students continue to come to us over the years and see them grow up and feel a part of this community we have during this time."
