Lock Haven Students Expand Sports Events... Raise Money For A Fellow Student
A Night Out In The Rec Lock Haven's Campus' security started an 'Open Rec Night' for students to attend once a year on a Friday night. During this rec night you formed teams and competed in walleyball, basketball and other activities. Professor Bridget Roun, a Health and Physical Education professor, taught a class that had a requirement to complete an event each semester. After Brian's accident, her class voted to join with the campus security's rec night and create 'Play for Brian'. Play for Brian happens one weekend night a year to raise money for the Brian Keefer Medical Fund. The money raised was split equally between Brian Keefer and Denny Coleman, another paraplegic. The night still consists of sporting tournaments on teams. The first year that Play for Brian existed the students raised over $9,000! Since the first year, Play for Brian has raised over $28,000.
Student Volunteer Spotlight: Colette Young Colette Young played a huge role in the success of 'Play for Brain'. When interviewed about her volunteer work with this event she stated; “Being on the Play for Brian committee made me feel like I was truly making a difference. It gave me a strong sense of pride and gave me more compassion for people with disabilities. It opened my eyes to truly be thankful for my life and not take my health for granted.”
Play for Brian - 'Keef' The Dream Alive
Brian
Keefer is a student at Lock Haven University. In July 2008,
Brian was injured in a gymnastics accident and become a quadriplegic.
Before this accident, Brian was very active and competed in numerous athletics. Before his accident Brian competed as a member of the Lock Haven University's Track and Field team. During the summer of 2011, Brian and his family were chosen to be on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which was featured on television
