Meet the Students!
Charlotte on left, Trisha on the right.
a 5th year senior majoring in Education, has been a tutor/ counselor for 2 years with the Upward Bound program. When asked how she became involved with the program she told us that she had been in search of a summer job and Upward Bound was hiring for their summer program. As she worked with the program she began to quickly see that this was a job that would provide more opportunities then just making some money. Instead she saw the participants grow throughout their high school years
and become more confident with themselves and where they want to go in life. CHarlotte also gained great experience
for her major and thusly attained a Teachers Assistant job with a participating school, that she had been
involved with for Upward bound. The upward bound program has definitely been a impacting experience on Charlotte who told us she "wants to continue to worth with programs like upward bound", that help struggling high school students prepare for the next step in their lives, college.
now a graduate of Lock Haven University was also a tutor/counselor to the participants of the Upward Bound program. She participated in helping the high school students with their classes and helped to prepare them for college.Trisha found the program to be rewarding because she helped students look at schools and introduced them to opportunities they may not have explored had they been researching alone. She was an example to the students in the sense that growing up she had faced some of the same issues the participants have and can show them that it is possible to succeed at college. Trisha stated that, "When I first started college I knew I wanted to help adolescents prepare for what college would bring them. Upward Bound was the program that would allow me to do this. I wanted them to see that I was once in the situation they are in now and that I really want to help them succeed, when I saw them succeeding with my help I could see I was making a difference in their lives and that was very important to me."
What is Upward Bound?
Upward bound is a nation wide program that is part of the Federal Trio program, it was one of the original programs that was connected to 2 similar programs hence the name "TRIO", but has now grown into 6 or 7 programs. Upward Bound is a program that helps high school students, through all 4 of their high school years, prepare for college.
Each participant has their own individual plan, but their plan is also is based on what grade level the participant is currently in. The
Academic year provides students at their own school, with a one hour, once a week session after school. The Schools participating include; Bucktail and Central Mountain in Clinton county, and in Lycoming county Jersey Shore and Williamsport.
Upward Bound is a free program, funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education, in the amount of $250,000. It is supported by additional funding and services from LHU of Pennsylvania, local school districts, and the LHU Foundation.
There are two parts to Upward Bound: A summer residential program and an academic year program.
Summer Residential Program
The residential summer program combines concentrated academic work plus structured and optional recreational activities, both on and off campus at Lock Haven University.
Academic Year Program
Throughout each school year, Upward Bound students meet for an hour to and hour and a half weekly in their home school with an Academic Center Educator (ACE) who provides individualized tutoring, guidance, and counseling in academic, career, social, or personal matters.
Speaking to Tulare Park, head of the upward bound program at Lock Haven University, Charlotte Cox a 5th Year Senior who was a Academic Center Educator (ACE) along with Trisha O'Neal and Daykeema, a participant of the program, who stated that " upward bound, (which she is still involved in) has helped her learn more about herself and keeps her focused on preparing for college.", conveyed how special this program is for those who participate and the students from Lock Haven University that help the Upward Bound participants, prepare for college so that they learn the skills they need to succeed at whatever college they decide to attend.
