LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY

Fundamentals of Public Speaking [SPCH 102]: The study and performance of public speaking as a means of communication, self-expression and social control in a democratic society. Theories and techniques of public speaking are explored in class through a series of public speaking activities.

Small Group Communication [SPCH 103]: The theory and practice of small group communication. Students learn the techniques of how to lead a discussion and how to participate in a discussion. The topics of discussion are chosen primarily from current events. Service-learning and web-based activities (e.g. electronic meetings) are integral to the course.

Interpersonal Communication [SPCH 104]: Emphasizes understanding human communication from a personal perspective. Students are introduced to the basic communication process.  Through a series of activities, the student gains insight in the areas of listening skills, small group behavior, self-concept development and interviewing. The applications of these skills and techniques are focused to enhance communication in daily life.

First-year Student Seminar [JOUR 159]: Works through activities, guest lectures, and projects to build the academic skills and university/town connections necessary for success at Lock Haven University. I was in the first group of faculty members to help develop and teach this course at Lock Haven.

Introduction to Communication Research [SPCH 315]: Focuses on the basics of research in the field of communication.  Through reading, class discussion, lecture, exercises and assignments, students explore how to write an academic or professional research report.  In addition, students critically analyze othersresearch. I designed the course, obtained its approval through curriculum committees, and was the first to teach the course.

Listening and Conflict Management [SPCH 301]: Introduces students to concepts of listening and teaches them how to manage conflicts through a variety of effective methods.  Students will develop skills involved in the listening process to increase their understanding of others' thoughts and feelings and gather accurate information.  They overcome barriers to effective listening and are able to provide more accurate responses to questions.  Students study and broaden their own conflict management styles.  Students learn the principles of mediation and negotiation.  Co-developed and co-taught course with Professor Lisa Riede.

Communication Capstone Seminar [SPCH/MCOM 400]: Designed to use a workshop format to address communication theories, communication issues as they relate to the public, and practical applications.  Students read, discuss and analyze various communication theories, develop a major research project and a professional portfolio, and explore current issues affecting the industry, including the impact of emerging technologies and matters of professional ethics and responsibility.  Topics will be addressed from the perspective of the student's major emphasis. I was the first faculty member to teach the course at Lock Haven University.

Organizational Communication [SPCH 300]:  Designed to examine verbal and written communication that occurs in organizations.  Included in this focus are, among other topics, informal and formal methods of communication, power bases, leadership and corporate communication flow.
