Bomb Threat

  • Listen and gather information.
  • Call Law Enforcement (if necessary from an outside or cell phone.).
  • Call RD and/or RD on duty.
  • Evacuate the building calmly.
  • Document the incident.

 

Drugs

  • Listen and gather information.
  • Call RD and/or RD on duty.
  • Call Law Enforcement.
  • Document the incident.

Fights

  • Call RD and/or RD on duty.
  • Call Law Enforcement.
  • Do not get in between combatants.
  • Document the incident.

 

Medical Emergencies

  • Call RD and/or RD on duty.
  • Call Law Enforcement and request an ambulance
  • Document the incident.
  • Never transport victims yourself!

 

Rape

  • Gather information, listen, and use your best counseling techniques.
  • Your RD and/or the RD on duty need to be informed.
  • Document the incident.
  • Be supportive and follow up with the person.

Robbery

  • Listen and gather information.
  • Call Law Enforcement and RD and/or the RD on duty.
  • Document the Incident.
  • Advise against retaliation against suspects.

Suicide Attempt

  • Notify your Resident Director and/or the Resident Director on duty.  Do not keep this information to yourself!  As soon as RD arrives, he or she is in charge of the situation.
  • See if you can ascertain what he/she has taken (make note of amount and type) and the approximate time when he/she took it.  If you find empty bottles or prescription vials, collect them and send them to the hospital.
  • Document the incident.
  • When appropriate a professional staff member will inform you of further developments regarding the student.

 

Suicidal Gesture

  • Listen and gather information

o         Suicidal thoughts are difficult to verbalize (ask questions).

o         Don't minimize feelings.

o         Do not attempt to joke them out of it.

o         Listen carefully with concern; ask for details.

o         Use reflective listening.

o         Summarize reported problems.

  • Report all information gathered to the RD or RD on duty.
  • Document the incident.
