ROOMMATE AGREEMENT

I.    Community/Personal Property
An area of concern is what to do about property, including "community" property (property that can be used by all roommates), and "personal" property (those "off-limits" items).

You may use these possessions of mine:

II.   Responsibilities
A second area of potential difficulty is "responsibilities". It is important for roommates to share the responsibilities that are part of the residence hall experience. Things such as cleaning the room, keeping the room secure, phone calls, and shared responsibilities for the suite area area all important matters that cannot be neglected.

1.        Security
I agree to lock the door of our room whenever I leave.

I also understand that failure to do so could be found to constitute negligence. If a theft or vandalism to property in the room results from my negligence, I understand that I might be liable for the loss.

2.        House Cleaning
We agree to share the following responsibilities.

Sweeping/vacuuming, emptying trash, dusting, picking up/tidying room, defrosting the refrigerator, etc.

3.        Phone Calls
The ability to make and receive phone calls and to have messages taken for you is important to roommates. To avoid problems with the use of the phone, the following is agreed upon:

III.   Study Hours
It is also important to discuss some lifestyle choices that could cause problems

This is the way we will resolve potential conflicts (e.g. one roommate may agree to study elsewhere after certain hours.)

IV.   Visitation
One of the most common problems between roommates lies in the area of visitation. Who visits, for how long, and when are common questions. If you discuss with each other who will visit, etc., you should be able to avoid conflict.

For those areas where we differ on visitation preferences, we have decided to compromise in this manner (list areas and compromise)

We, as roommates, enter into this agreement in good faith. We fully intend to abide by all policies that we have made. We agree to be flexible and to revise this agreement as it becomes necessary. Failure to adhere to this agreement may result in appropriate sanctions.
