There are five required experiments. They are to be run during the first seven weeks of the semester. September 8 Note: Office hours have been set up to allow you to come in to work on experiments. |
The following experiments are required. Since we have limited equipment, you will sign up fo a date to begin each experiment. The report for an experiment will be due the week following your scheduled completion of the experiment. Make sure you coordinate your use of any equipment with the other students who may need it. The total amount of time needed for the experiments is 8.5 weeks so you will also need to do more than one experiment at the same time (multitasking) to finish before October 23. All reports for assigned experiments are due no later than October 23. Experiment 39: Preparation of an a,b-Unsaturated Ketone via Michael and Aldol Condensation Reactions (2 weeks) (326-330) Report. Experiment 49: Photoreduction of Benzophenone and Rearrangement of Benzopinacol to Benzopinacolone (2 weeks) (411-419) Report. Experiment 50: Luminol, Part C (0.5 week) (419-425, 426) Report. Experiment 57A: Isolation of Essential Oils from Allspice, Cloves, Cumin, Caraway, Cinnamon, or Fennel. Sign up for one of the spices. Experiment 62: Esterification Reactions of Vanillin: The Use of NMR to Solve a Structure Proof Problem ( 2 weeks) (507-509). If you did not take instrumental this past spring, you will need instructions on how to use the FT-NMR. Report. |
