Laboratory Information


  1. Laboratory Point Distribution
    1. Notebook (20 points)
    2. Individual lab reports (all reports, including data tables, must be typed and proofread. Any chemical structures that you include must be done with an appropriate chemical drawing program. Don't rely only on the spelling checker in your word processing program to find mistakes. Carefully read each report before you turn it in. Clear and concise communication is an important part of scientific inquiry.) The format for the reports will be available on the 430 Web site.

      2. Michael and Aldol Condensation Reactions (40 points)
      3. Photoreduction of Benzophenone and Rearrangement of Benzpinacol (15 points)
      4. Luminol, Part C (10 points)
      5. Esterification Reactions of Vanillin or the Aldehyde Enigma (20 points)
    3. Final experiment (part of lecture grade)
    4. Personal evaluation (15 points) Some criteria for the evaluation include the following:
      1. Do you observe safety considerations?
      2. Do you formulate and ask intelligent questions? Do you participate in laboratory discussion?
      3. Do you try to maintain the condition of the labs and instruments in good working order?
      4. Do you know when to work with the other students and help them to learn and when to work independently?
      5. Do you know when and how to do a TLC, a vacuum filtration, take a mp or boiling point, do a distillation, etc.? Do you understand why and when you would do these things and can you extrapolate what you have learned to new and different situations?
      6. Have you begun to exhibit any creativity in the laboratory?
