Brief paper (1-3 double spaced typed pages with references) with the following information (see Pavia):

  1. Why do you want to run this experiment?
    1. What hypothesis will you be testing?
    2. What possible results might you find?
  2. History
    1. Who initially did the experiment?
    2. What was the purpose of the initial experiment?
    3. If a synthesis, why was the compound interesting?
  3. Chemicals needed
    1. starting material, solvents, catalysts, etc., Include information on safety
    2. available at LHU? Check the on line chemical data base. It has a listing of the chemicals available in the organic stockroom. If the chemical is not in the organic stockroom, it may be available downstairs. Check with me for availability.
    3. Aldrich catalog number for each chemical, even if it is available.
    4. Cost of each chemical, even if it is available.

Eighth Lab Period

Proposed experimental procedure. Follow the format for the experimental section in one of the standard organic chemistry journals such as:

  • Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS)
  • Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC)
  • Tetrahedron Letters (Tet Lett)
  • Tetrahedron (Tet)

Day before the Ninth Lab Period

Optional aid to help finalize project at 5:30 pm.

Ninth Lab Period

Begin lab work

Last Monday of Lecture
Thirteenth Lab Period

Final report (3-4 pages) is due. Write it as a communication to JACS. Include a brief introduction, the actual experimental procedure you followed, results and discussion, and a brief conclusion. Make sure you include any references you used that are relevant. The 15-minute PowerPoint presentations on the final experiment will begin during the final week of lectures.
