The Aldehyde Enigma

Report

1. Turn in the products in properly labeled vials.
2. Turn in the yellow pages for the experiment. Be sure the safety table is included.
3. Turn in the data tables for the reaction.
4. Write a brief description (1-2 paragraphs) of the experimental procedure that you followed. Include any relevant observations. Do not copy what is in Pavia. Write it in the third person.
5. Write a flow diagram showing the separation of the two products.

This is an example of the Cannizzaro reaction, an auto redox reaction of aromatic aldehydes. The products are the alcohol (reduction) and carboxylic acid (oxidation) corresponding to the original aldehyde.
