Isolation of Essential Oils by Steam Distillation

Report:

  1. Turn in any sample you have left in a properly labeled vial.
  2. Turn in the yellow pages for the experiment. Be sure the safety table is included.
  3. Write a brief description (1-2 paragraphs) of the experimental method that you followed. Include any relevant observations. Do not copy what is in Pavia. Write it in the third person. Include the following in your report:
    1. A data table with the original amount of spice used, the weight of the isolated oil, and the weight percent recovery.
    2. An interpretation of the IR of the oil. Include a table of frequencies of the important peaks and what functional groups they correspond to. Do not attach the original IR spectrum. The spectrum is raw data that belongs in your notebook.
    3. An analysis of what the gc tells you. How many components did you see in the gc trace? Could there be more than you determine from the gc trace? Why or why not? Include a table of the Rt values for the peaks. If more than one peak is present, identify it (i.e., essential oil, unknown, solvent, air, etc.) If more than one sample peak is present, record what percent of the essential oil mixture it is. Do not include the gc trace in your report.

The structures of the essential oils are given below.
