While you are working as a lab employee, I feel that it is my job to help each of you reach your greatest potential and be employees worthy of any job you seek in the future. Learning to deal with customers, co-workers and communicating your needs, desires, and problems to your supervisor. Some of the issues we may deal with may not be pretty but the intent is the same... Good Communication Skills... Good Work Ethics... Job Success now and in the future. I look forward to working with each and every one of you.

Lablog
While working for me, communication is a must. I am interested in all that affects the labs and you as a lab attendant. I do request that you carefully consider your words when sending email directly or indirectly to me. Please do not send me an email that contains rude remarks unless it is a direct quote from someone else. I expect that most communications will be done via email so that written documentation can be seen. I do hope that you will stop by and talk to me so that I get a chance to know you more then just by a name.
Please include me in all of the following correspondences:
Not able to work your normally scheduled hours
or those you have agreed to fill.
In need of a sub, found a sub, or
will be a sub
Any lab issues that need attendance
(outside of computer repairs)
Ongoing issues of any type.
Problems you encounter with faculty,
staff, or students.
As an employee of the Department of Computing and Instructional Technology (CIT) and having direct contact with faculty, staff and students, it is vital that you make a good impression on our users. Please respect the other person (even when they are not respecting you). Each person deserves your respect and I expect nothing less. If you are having a problem with a particular individual, please contact me immediately. If they have a complaint or comment, please have them send an email to lhulabs@lhup.edu.
We have setup an e-mail account where students, staff, and faculty can write the CIT and make suggestions, comments, or complaints about labs and lab attendants. All inquires that concern you as an individual will be placed in your employee file, and you will be contacted to meet with me and discuss the inquiry (good or bad). The address is lhulabs@lhup.edu. If you feel that someone may send a complaint, or if a situation occurs, I would greatly appreciate you letting me know immediately.
Due to the new eTime system, until further notice, you MUST complete both eTime and the Online Timecard (paper version).
eTime
eTime is the newest online, automatic timecard system. While we are transferring and validating inputs, the paper copy MUST also be done. To view step-by-step instructions click here
*** Timecards are due every
Monday by 8:00 AM. ***
They are to be handed in directly to the CIT Technology Support Center in Robinson 506.
TIMECARDS
----- Timecards are to be done with the online timecard format ONLY (http://www.lhup.edu/mparment/Computer%20labs/onlinetimecard.htm). They must

with a handwritten timecard, please be prepared to enter them on one of the
computers in the office..
----- You are eligible for 20 hours per week maximum, unless other arrangements
are made. Repeated offenders of those working more than 20 hours per week

Those going over the 20 hour limit repeatedly will result in a loss of all
scheduled CIT hours.

-------------- The person picking up your check should have a copy of the email
in case I am not here.
If two or more people show up to work a scheduled lab hour, the person who's login appears on the web schedule will be the attendant on-duty. If you arrive in a lab and the lab attendant is not present, you are able to sit the lab and get credit. Please watch that this does not take you over your 20 hours per week limit. Let the floater know that you are sitting the lab and email me which lab you are sitting, and when you arrived.
NO FLOATERs
Please NOTE: Beginning in Spring of 2008, there is no floater scheduled Monday thru Thursday from 000(midnight) to 1600 (4:00 PM) and Fridays from 000 to 1900 (7:00 PM). Each lab attendant MUST enter a lablog within the first 10 minutes of each hour of employment.
Lab Attendant Employee Point System
Why I use a point system
This point system will be used for the following purposes:
How to correct your rating system, once added to your file:
If the floater does not contact you within the first 15 minutes of each hour. Please do the lablog, completing the information for your lab and leaving all other labs blank. Please also mark in the comments, that the floater - floater's name did not contact you for the ? hour. See section on filling out lablog if you are unsure of how it is done. If I do not receive an e-mail from you, I will assume that you are also a no show and appropriate points will be added to your file.
The Point System
1pts Tardy (1pts for every 5 minutes late)
5pts per hour - Sick Unexcused (Called in or E-mailed)
1pt Replacement found
5pts per hour - Replacement attempted but not found [ample notice (48 hours) was given, but no replacement could be found]
5pts per hour - Called/E-mailed on short notice Excused
10pts per hour - Called/E-mailed short notice Unexcused
10pts per hour - No Show
10pts per hour - No Show - No lablog (No Floater and YOU did not send lablog for your lab indicating that you were present)
10pts per hour - You arrive in a lab and leave prior to the end of your shift without prior arrangements
Finding and Informing Melanie of replacements
Use the following format for any sub/replacement mailings (this is a combo of all original mailings): Please make a separate request for each separate timeframe (ex: 800-1000 and 1200-1500 each need to be separate).
Person requesting replacement:
Date needing coverage:
Time needing covered:
Lab needing covered:
Date of original request:
- 1) Person agreeing to sub for
you: (who has agreed, 2nd left blank)
or
- 2) Person doing the subbing:
(you agree to sub, 1st left blank)
* Please remember to use the following format in the subject area: requester's username, date, start time (ex: stutest, 7/6/06 1200)
Please place these formats in a location that is easily accessible by you when sending e-mail. I also suggest that when e-mailing the requests that you include yourself, the other person involved, and me.
When an item is left in the lab, especially if it of value, bring it immediately to Robinson hall 506. Computing Center staff will then determine if it needs to be turned into Law Enforcement. If anyone comes looking for the item, DO NOT describe it nor confirm what an item looks like. Refer them to Robinson 506 to speak with Melanie or Sharon. They should bring their LHU ID with them, unless that is what they left behind.
Keep the hourly log (green sheets) each and every hour. The hourly log can help justify some time entry errors, but since they can be easily doctored, points may still be assigned.
Class in the lab you are scheduled to work
- First check with the instructor to determine if you will be needed during the class time or if the instructor wants you to stay.
- If needed you MUST stay
- If asked to stay, you MUST stay
- If you leave the lab,
- You MUST contact your floater with one of the following:
- You are going to sit in another lab and which lab you will be in. (you still get paid)
- Inform floater you are leaving all labs (you will NOT get paid)
- You MUST return to the lab if a class ends prior to your scheduled hour ends. Please return prior to the class exiting the lab.
Please tell the floater if you are scheduled for one lab, but sitting in another (most likely due to a noshow/shortage of personnel).
Lab attendant machine is down, you may sit at another machine in the room, but it MUST be as close to the attendant desk as possible.
Arrive to work on-time. Showing a sense of responsibility is key. Arrive every time on-time. If you have a class that ends on the hour, please make arrangements with the lab attendant prior to you or the floater, so that the lab is not left unoccupied. If prior arrangements are not made, points can and will be associated.
Stay in labs for all scheduled hours. You are responsible to stay in the lab during your entire scheduled time frame. If you need to leave a lab (other than a quick restroom run) you MUST contact the floater. *** Remember to dock the time you are gone from your timecard ***
You MAY NOT leave a lab for a cigarette break or snack run without notifying the floater and docking the time from your timecard. You are also to bring NO FOOD or DRINK into the computer labs.
Clearing the lab for incoming classes.
- Check the schedule at the beginning of each shift to ensure that the lab does or does not need cleared.
- Make closing announcements at 5 minute intervals starting at a minimum of 15 minutes prior to class start time.
- If an instructor is on the schedule, but repeatedly does not show up for lab time, please let me know, I in turn will contact the instructor and have the schedule adjusted accordingly.
DO NOT let any, non-employee of the CIT sit a lab for you.
NO Game Playing while you are on duty, this includes internet games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please limit the number of friends hanging out at the attendant desk. Remember we are all professionals.
Close the lab at the end of the evening. If you are in Raub 106 lab you MUST wait for Law Enforcement to come and lock the lab. You may not leave. I will pay you for any time associated with this factor. If it becomes problematic, I will talk to Law Enforcement. Please note, this lab MUST be cleared 5 minutes earlier to avoid any issues. Stevenson lab, please shut this lab down 30 minutes prior to the library closing. All other labs, clear the room and ensure the door is locked and closed. If it is not, please contact Law Enforcement.
No Call from Floater by 10 minutes after *** If you are not contacted by the floater by 10 minutes after the hour, you MUST perform lablog for your lab ONLY (see Lablog below). This lets me know that you were present and working. If you do not do this, you will be marked as a no show and receive the 10 points for that hour.
ATTENTION SMOKERS: You are NOT to leave your lab to go smoke. If you cannot work 1-3 hours without a cigarette, then please cut back your hours to a time frame you can handle. Your responsibility is in the lab. Besides, you leaving the lab is unfair to the non-smokers who stay in the lab.
If you are not contacted by the floater by 15 minutes after the hour: you MUST perform lablog for your lab ONLY, leaving all other labs blank. (See Lablog section below if you don't know how to sign on). If you do not do this, you will be marked as a no show and receive the 10 points for that hour.
NOTE: There are NO floaters during summer sessions and breaks. Each lab attendant is responsible for their own lablog each hour.
Perform lablog within the first 10 minutes of each hour (To avoid problems, please fill out lablog carefully.)
You are to call each lab, each hour. Please give a few minutes leeway for those coming from class. 10 minutes is more than enough time. Complete the lablog ACCURATELY. If you do not contact the labs on time, you will be marked as a no show or being tardy and associated points will be given.
Please check the next section to ensure the accurate filling out of the lablog report. Fill out lablog CAREFULLY!
Floater, you should be walking around to the various labs and getting to know the lab attendants working for you. You should be making sure that the attendants are doing their job. Please remember that you are my eyes and my ears, I rely on you to keep me informed.
If there is no answer, you MUST walk to that lab to ensure the attendant is not there and not just a phone off the hook or ringer turned off.
NO game playing while on duty!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are NOT to be in Akeley backroom, you are working for me during this time.
This goes for floaters too.
Filling out the Lablog and Floater information
Signing onto lablog: Open up a web browser (Internet Explorer), go to Lab Log
When filling out the lablog, please use caution. With the above point system, you may cause someone else to gain unnecessary points. You MUST contact all labs between 5 - 10 minutes after the hour.
Please use caution when gathering information, in previous semesters attendants were marked as noshow, when they were in fact here, but sitting in another lab. When a class is in session, please label the lablog as CLASS and then tell me in the comments section where the lab attendant is sitting
Floaters, if you call a lab and no one answers, it is your responsibility to walk to that lab to investigate the situation. Do not assume that a class is scheduled or assume that a normally tardy lab attendant will show up eventually.
Floaters, if lablog is not done during the first 15 minutes, I will assume that you are a noshow. So if you forget, please send me e-mail. Also, ensure that all lab attendants know where you are. If I need to track you down, I should only have to call one lab to find out your location.
You are to gather the following information prior to filling out the lablog:
Name/Login of the person sitting in the lab
Once this information has been gathered, fill
out the lablog. (See example below)
*** under comments, add the time that the log is being written
for. ***
*** keep all comments to lab related ONLY, do not add any
unnecessary information, these are seen by others... Thanks ***
