Labs in Matter and Energy

We study the function of steam engines, electric generators and motors, solar cells, wind turbines, etc. We also search the answer of more fundamental questions like "How much wood do I need to burn to lift a 20 lb bucket 3 feet up?", or "What is the end product of the radioactive decay of Uranium- 238?" It can be warm or very windy in the lab. The pictures in this page are from a "windy" lab with the class of the Fall of 2006. The students explore the electrical power that can be extracted from the wind generator and the efficiency of different blade types.

The "Wind Turbine" lab was set up with the help of Michael Arquin who enthusiastically propagates the wind energy.
