Lock Haven resident receives LHU Provost’s Purchase Award
Student’s art work will hang in Provost’s Office
May 11, 2012
Lock Haven resident Lyndsey Hewitt has been named the recipient of the 2012 Provost’s Purchase Award at Lock Haven University. Her graphic design entitled “Red Portal” was selected from the works exhibited in the university’s juried student art show.
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David L. White has purchased Red Portal for the Provost’s Office in Sullivan Hall.
Associate Professor of Art Jason Bronner described the purchased work: “Lyndsey Hewitt's artwork Red Portal reads simultaneously as womb and hence body as well as a topsy-turvy landscape suggestive of the end of days. This intimately sized 12.5 x 10 inch digital print shows layered semitransparent forms with a central inverted arch-like shape cradling what appears like vegetation. All of this hovers over a field of reds with black linear swirls that suggest the whole image is in motion.”
Ms. Hewitt, a 2008 graduate of Central Mountain High School, is a senior majoring in Communication Media with a minor in Art. She will graduate in December. She is the daughter of Tim and Nicole Hewitt.
The Purchase Award consists of a certificate and a check for the purchase price of the work. Accepting the Purchase Award, Hewitt commented, “This is the first time anyone has ever purchased one of my pieces. It’s very exciting to know that someone thinks that much of my work.” She added, “I’m especially proud that it will hang in the Provost’s Office even after I graduate.”
Professor Bronner agreed. “It is a great honor for the students to be selected for the Provost's Purchase Award. Only a select group are of students are accepted into the juried student show and then to be selected from those is a notable accomplishment.”
Bronner also thanked Dr. White for his support of the Lock haven University art program. “The participation and support from Provost Dr. White, individually, and as a representative of the LHU administration, is significant and welcomed. As art faculty we are greatly pleased by his actions as well as to see the entire University take an interest in the student art show. This support for the arts and for our students is one of the many elements that makes LHU a special place.”
In 2011, as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. White made a Dean’s Purchase Award and purchased a student work to hang in the Dean’s Office.
Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.
