LHU to host screening of “House” episode, followed by discussion

Coincidence…or Divine Plan?

Feb. 8, 2012

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- On Wednesday, February 29, 2012 in the Hall of Flags in Robinson Hall of Lock Haven University, Professor of Philosophy Daniel Shaw will screen an episode from the TV series House. M.D. and lead a discussion of it thereafter.  It is a series that often explores ethical issues and questions about the existence of God, the perfect topics for philosophical discussion.

In an episode from the fifth season entitled "Unfaithful," Dr. House treats a priest working in a homeless shelter who has lost his faith.  The series of events that results in curing the priest's mysterious disease leads him to regain his faith.  The debate between him and House turns on the question of whether God has a divine plan in which everything happens for the best, or whether incredible coincidences happen all the time in life, for both good and ill.

This forum is co-sponsored by the Ethics Center and the Philosophy Club of LHU.  Admission is free and the public is invited.

Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in the commonwealth.  Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study.  Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.
