LHU auditorium comes alive with Latin Jazz


Student and guest musicians combine talents for jazz concert

Lock Haven University’s Price Performance Center came alive with the sounds of Latin Jazz on Thursday, May 3 as the LHU jazz ensembles presented their spring concert. The concert featured the talents of student performers and guest musicians.

The special guests were jazz virtuosos Tom Hamilton, tenor sax and flute; Alex Sell, piano; Jeff Beck, bass; Kevin Lowe, drums; and Rob Velez, percussion. The concert was led by LHU’s Dr. Eddie Severn, assistant professor of music, director of jazz studies, and internationally recognized jazz trumpeter. 

One member of the audience, Assistant Professor of English Gayatri Devi, commented, “It has been wonderful to see the systematic growth of the LHU jazz ensemble over the years since I have been here.”  She added, “I want to thank Professor Severn for giving our talented students this great opportunity to play with virtuoso musicians . . . These are experiences that will stay forever with young and evolving musicians.”

Lock Haven University performers were Cody Wright, alto sax; Amber Swank, alto sax; Zach Smith, tenor sax; Tiffany Smith, tenor sax; Jim Chapman, baritone sax; Howard Hufford, trumpet; Alex Swartz, trumpet; Lisa Shultz, trumpet; Jay Vonada, trombone; John Mattricks, trombone; Mike Loewen, trombone; Adria Stokes, violin; John Van Horn, bass; Nate Galmish, bass; Chris Moore, guitar; Denver Juliano, drums; and Gary Snook, drums.

The program of music included numbers performed by the LHU Jazz Combo, the Eddie Severn Latin Group and the LHU Big Band.
