The President's Commission on the Status of Women sponsors or co-sponsors some annual and some special events.

Presentations by Lori Ostlund - February 9, 2012
Join the members of the President's Commission on the Status of Women as they co-sponsor a series of events with author Lori Ostlund. The events include a reading and discussion on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at 7 pm in the Hamblin Hall of Flags (Robinson 115). These events are co-sponsored with the English Department, Women's Studies program, President's Commission on LGBT Issues, International Studies, Office of Social Equity, and Office of Human and Cultural Diversity as part of the Women's Studies speaker series. Self-Defense Workshop - October 26, 2011
A self-defense workshop, led by Sue Feathers, will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 7 pm. This workshop will be free to the first 25 attendees who preregister, $5 for anyone who preregisters after the initial 25, and $10 at the door. To sign up, please visit the HOPE Center or call (570) 484-2111. The deadline for preregistration is October 18, 2011. The workshop is co-sponsored by the HOPE Center, President's Commission on the Status of Women, and Women's Studies program.
Presentations by Beth Fantaskey - October 24 - 26, 2011
Join the members of the President's Commission on the Status of Women as they co-sponsor a series of events with Beth Fantaskey, a young adult novelist. The events include a reading and panel discussion on Monday, October 24, 2011, at 7 pm in the Parsons Union Building Multipurpose Room. Ms. Fantaskey will also be speaking at Central Montain Middle and High Schools on Tuesday, October 25 and will be part of the Ross Library's Booked for Lunch program on Wednesday, October 26. These events were co-sponsored with the English Department, Women's Studies program, and Admissions Office as part of the Write Now: Community Conversations with Contemporary Authors series. Presentations by Valente Frazier - April 7 - 8, 2011
Join the members of the President's Commission on the Status of Women as they co-sponsor a series of events, including a reception (Thursday, April 7, at 6 pm in the HOPE Center), presentation (Thursday, April 7 at 7 pm in the Ulmer Planetarium), and student luncheon (Friday, April 8, at 12:30 pm in Bentley S06), by Valente Frazier, Emmy award winning, celebrity make-up artist. These events were co-sponsored with the FASSt Commission, HOPE Center, Office of Human and Cultural Diversity, and Office of Social Equity.
Christine Smith Performance - March 30, 2011
Come join us for a special performance by Christine Smith, a female jazz musician, in celebration of Women's History Month. The event will be held in Bentley S-06 and S-07, starting at 7 pm. This event was co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies Minor, Office of Human and Cultural Diversity, and the HOPE Center in recognition of Women’s History Month.
Liz Funk Presentation - March 17, 2010
The President's Commission on the Status of Women, with the Women's Coalition, HOPE Center, and Office of Social Equity, is co-sponsoring a presentation by Liz Funk, author of Supergirls Speak Out. Liz Funk will be discussing her book, which addresses special pressures confronting young women. In particular, Liz has written about struggling with an eating disorder, and with the phenomenon of cyber-stalking. The presentation was in the Hamblin Hall of Flags at 7:00 pm.

Take Your Daughter/Son to Work Day - fourth Thursday of April
The President's Commission on the Status of Women co-sponsors an annual Take Your Daughter/Son to Work Day with different student groups. The 2011 Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day was co-sponsored with the Early Childhood Education group and the Psychological Association group.
Let Her Voice Be Heard and Celebration of LHU Women - late March
In conjunction with "Let Her Voice Be Heard," the President's Commission on the Status of Women sponsors a reception in Celebration of LHU Women. "Let Her Voice Be Heard," a reading of writings by women, is organized by the English Club, along with the Women's Studies Minor. As part of Celebrating LHU Women, the nominees for the Woman of Distinction awards are announced.
The President's Commission on the Status of Women co-sponsors Women's Voices, Women's Visions, a panel discussion/workshop in celebration of women. The event is held in late March each year, in honor of Women's History Month.
President's Distinction Awards (for Work Toward Women's Issues - nominations taken in February and March
Each year, the President's Commission on the Status of Women sponsors the Woman of Distinction Award. We give three awards - one to a student, one to a faculty member, and one to a staff member. The Distinction Award is used to recognize the efforts of those who women are exceptional in their service to the university and community, specifically service to furthering women's issues. Nominations for the award are usually taken from in February and March. Student winners are recognized at the Spring Award Recognition/Convocation. Faculty and staff are recognized at the President's Fall Open Meeting. For a list of past winners, please click here.
