LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Dr. Michael R. Greenberg, medical director for the Lock Haven University School of Graduate Studies, has been appointed to serve on the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Greenberg, who began his term in January, was nominated to serve on the commission by the American Medical Association (AMA).

"Dr. Greenberg was selected as the AMA appointee because of his depth of experience in physician assistant education and his familiarity with the physician assistant accreditation process," said Dr. Michael D. Maves, AMA executive vice president and chief executive officer. "He also has been a leader in the utilization of physician assistants in group practice settings, creating a successful model of multidisciplinary care leading to improved patients outcomes."

According to ARC-PA standards, ARC-PA establishes the validity of physician assistant education though a peer review process that includes documentation and periodic site visit evaluations to substantiate compliance with the standards. Goals of the accreditation process are to "encourage sound educational practices and to stimulate continuous self-study and improvement." Additionally, ARC-PA provides information and guidance to individuals and organizations on physician assistant program accreditation. As an ARC-PA commissioner, Greenberg will be a member of the committee that approves the accreditation of physician assistant programs throughout the U.S.

At Lock Haven University, Greenberg is the medical director of the physician assistant program, a position he has held since the program's beginning in 1996. LHU's physician assistant program is the only one of its kind within the 14 schools of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, according to Walter Eisenhauer, director of LHU's school of graduate studies.

Eisenhauer listed other qualities:
- It is the only publicly supported program of its kind in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, offering an entry level master's degree from the sponsoring institution.
- It has been recognized by ARC-PA for its use of educational technology and leadership.
- The program has published numerous articles in the P.A. educational literature and presented nationally regarding innovations in P.A. education.
- In 2003, the program was ranked close to 30th in the nation in the last U.S. News & World report ranking of P.A. Programs out of 137 programs.
- PA students and faculty have held leadership positions in state and national P.A. organizations.

A native of Lock Haven, Greenberg has been a local physician for 35 years. Since 1994, he has been president and chief executive officer of Clinton Medical Associates. In addition, Greenberg serves on the medical staff at the Lock Haven Hospital and is on the consulting staff of the Jersey Shore Hospital, the Bucktail Medical Center, and the Nittany Valley Rehab Hospital.

Greenberg attended Pennsylvania State University from 1963 to 1965. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine in l969 and received post graduate training in surgery at York Hospital in 1970. Greenberg is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Medical Management. He also holds a master's degree in business administration from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Greenberg belongs to the following medical societies: Pennsylvania Medical Society; Clinton County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Practice; American College of Cryosurgery; Aerospace Medical Association; American College of Physician Executives; Medical Group Management Association; American College of Medical Practice Executives; and the Physician Assistant Education Association.

"Without Mickey's support, commitment and expertise, the LHU physician assistant program would not exist as the stellar program it is today," said Dr. Keith T. Miller, university president. "The university is extremely pleased by his appointment as commissioner and thankful for all of his contributions to the physician assistant program and Lock Haven University."

"The appointment is a great honor for me and a fantastic recognition of Lock Haven University's physician assistant program," Greenberg said.
