Jensen appointed coordinator of STEP at LHU

Dr. Edward A. Jensen has been selected to serve as coordinator for Lock Haven University’s Student Technology Enhancement Program (STEP).

Dr. Edward Jensen

Through STEP, LHU will become the first public institution in Pennsylvania to require incoming students to own laptops, making the requirement necessary for freshmen and transfer students starting fall 2007. The laptops will be essential as the faculty increases placement of course materials on the Web for student use, for using instructional software and for viewing digital versions of textbooks. The requirement will be complimented by a wireless technology structure that will encompass the entire campus.

“It is imperative that we optimize the opportunity for success of this initiative,” said Dr. Keith T. Miller, LHU president. “Dr. Jensen will lead us in every aspect of the program.”

Jensen, who came to LHU in 2001, will continue to serve in his roles as director of the Master of Education program, coordinator of the Teaching and Learning degree program and associate professor of graduate studies.

He has experience implementing technology and served as an associate professor of instructional and information services at Brigham Young University-Hawaii from September 1988 to December 2000 where he also served as the director for the Academic Center of Excellence and the associate director for academic support. Jensen’s prior technology-related roles at that university include media services and instructional development coordinator and systems development coordinator. He also served as instructional media production and utilization instructor at the main campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

In his role as STEP coordinator, Jensen will develop and oversee the STEP initiative. He will work with various campus entities to provide necessary service and support related to the use of laptops in the learning process.

“I have long been a proponent of the effective application of technology in the teaching and learning process,” Jensen said. “The STEP initiative provides the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects relating to effective technology utilization in the learning setting that will benefit the students at Lock Haven University. It goes without saying that there will be challenges and hurdles to overcome, but I feel strongly that the benefits to the learners will outweigh the difficulties and problems that may arise. I look forward to working with all who have an interest in, or responsibility for, the STEP initiative.”.
