LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The 4th Annual David J. Tomasi Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Lock Haven University Athletic Training Club, was again a success. Over its 4-year history, the annual event has raised $9500 for the David J. Tomasi Memorial Scholarship and the LHU Athletic Training Club.

This year’s tournament was held on May 3 at the Clinton County Country Club in Mill Hall, and attracted 54 golfers. Participants consisted of LHU alumni, members of the local community, current and past LHU faculty and staff, family members and friends of current athletic training students and residents from other communities.

David Tomasi started his academic career at Slippery Rock University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health, Physical Education and Science. He earned his Master of Arts at West Virginia University. He went on to Boston University where he gained a Certification of Advanced Graduate Study in Physical Rehabilitation Education. He came to Lock Haven University in 1973 and retired in 2000. Tomasi was inducted into Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers' Society Hall of Fame in 2001.

Through hard work and dedication, Tomasi and Bruce Young established the Health Science Department at LHU in hopes of making it a distinguished program. Mr. Tomasi passed away in the spring of 2002. He is remembered as the father of LHU’s Athletic Training Education Program.

Tomasi educated his students inside and outside the classroom. Associate Professor/Athletic Trainer Dr. Yvette Ingram, faculty adviser of the Athletic Training Club, said, “So many of his students consider him their father away from home; he would offer advice and knowledge through his own experiences in life. He was the type of man that could bring out the best in every person.” She added, “The influence that Dave Tomasi had on the Lock Haven and Mill Hall communities could not be placed into words. He is truly loved and missed by all. This golf tournament is in his memory to bring people together and enjoy life the way that Dave Tomasi would want us to.”

Assistant Professor Carl Poff of the Health and Physical Education Department commented, “This is a very special event for me personally. Dave Tomasi was our athletic trainer for wrestling during my coaching time at Lock Haven. Dave was a true professional in every sense of the word and more importantly a true friend. It was an honor playing in this event and I’m happy that our current staff and students continue to applaud his legacy.”

Donnie Powers, owner of the Old Corner, has helped sponsor the David J. Tomasi Golf Tournament for the last four years. Toni Tomasi, wife of David J. Tomasi, made her annual appearance at the tournament. Assistant Professor Patrick Guerriero, Academic Development and Counseling Department, provided assistance and player recruitment.

Ingram thanked all Athletic Club members who were involved throughout the course of the golf tournament from start to finish. She said, “I am so proud of this group of students who helped organize this event. Over the last 4 years they have raised $9,500 for the David J. Tomasi Scholarship fund. This is such an impressive accomplishment for a student run event.”

Those students involved in leadership roles in planning and running the golf tournament were Brianne Peterson, President of the Athletic Training Club, in charge of organizing committees and overseeing all golf responsibilities; Bryan Bates, Forms Committee, in charge of mailings, thank-you letters and updating forms; Miranda Fisher, Prize Committee, in charge of collecting all prizes and donations used in the raffle, door prizes and team prizes; Kelly Wood, Advertisement Committee, in charge of advertising the golf tournament on campus and in the surrounding community; Erin Palangio, Country Club Committee, in charge of all functions dealing with the country club and the day of the golf tournament; Erin Shaffer, Social Committee, in charge of putting together the alumni social for the day before the tournament; and Allison Brooks, Budget Committee, in charge of collecting all money from donations and registration fees.
