Former LHU administrator to speak at convocation

Dr. Roy Stewart

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Dr. Roy T. Stewart, Jr., a former Lock Haven University administrator, will be the keynote speaker for the university’s Founder’s Day Convocation on Wednesday, September 2. The title of his talk will be “Building a Foundation for Your Future.” The convocation will be held in Price Performance Center at 1:30. The public is invited to this free event.

Lock Haven University was founded as the Central State Normal School in 1870. The university’s annual Founder’s Day Convocation honors Albert Newton Raub, founder and first principal of the Central State Normal School.

Dr. Stewart is a noted university educator and administrator. From 1997 to 2004, he was provost and vice president for academic affairs at LHU, and for the spring of 1999, he served LHU as acting president.

Dr. Stewart attended Bradley University, where he earned his B.S. with honors in Speech Communication with a minor in English. He also earned a secondary teaching certificate. He continued his education at Bradley, earning his M.A. in Speech Communication with a minor in Education. He earned his Ph.D. in Speech Communication with a minor in Communication from the University of Illinois.

Prior to coming to Lock Haven University, Dr. Stewart was hired by the communication department at Slippery Rock University, where he served as assistant professor, departmental chairperson, associate dean of arts and sciences, and dean of graduate studies and research.

From 2005 to 2006, Dr. Stewart served as interim provost/vice president for academic affairs at Western Connecticut State University, and from 2007 to 2008 served as interim senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the Connecticut State University System.

During his professional career, Dr. Stewart served on a variety of committees, commissions and review boards; presented numerous papers; and attended many conferences and workshops. He has received many awards for outstanding teaching and service.

Now retired, he and his wife, Ginny, live in Mercer, Pa. Dr. Stewart enjoys hunting and fishing. He also enjoys having the time to travel. He has been to Canada, China, Croatia, England, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Thailand, and Ukraine. In addition, he and his wife are avid motorcyclists and have ridden in all 50 of the United States. The Stewarts own a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.

Dr. Stewart continues to have strong ties to Lock Haven University. He describes LHU as “just the right size.” He says, “LHU is small enough to provide personal attention to students, but large enough to have sufficient resources to provide as fine an education as you can get anywhere.”

The convocation is scheduled for 1:30 – 2:45. Classes will follow a condensed schedule. Additional information is available on the LHU website www.lhup.edu.
