LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven University has received a $250 mini-grant from the Pennsylvania Campus Compact to support Martin Luther King Day events and service projects. The funds will be used to help implement “Looking Good Lock Haven,” a downtown beautification program. University students and local volunteers will decorate metal trash cans with designs developed by local artists. The theme of the designs will be honoring Lock Haven’s diverse past and future.
The grant was co-authored by Anne-Marie Turnage, director of the LHU MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship, Kenneth Hall, director of the LHU Office of Human and Multicultural Diversity, and Maria Boileau, director of Downtown Lock Haven, Inc. The project is also in partnership with the Clinton County Arts Council.
Students and community members will come together on January 19, 2009 to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King through civic engagement. Hall stated, "I believe that this project celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King by bringing people together in the spirit of unity and understanding.” Boileau added, “Downtown Lock Haven, Inc. is pleased to work with Lock Haven University on this great town/gown project. It’s not just a beautification project – it is an opportunity to bring downtown businesses, students and volunteers together for a very creative project. We are very lucky to have such a strong relationship with Lock Haven University.”
Turnage stressed that MLK Day of Service, identified by the Corporation for National and Community Service as one of the three national days of service, “is a day on rather than a day off. At LHU, we are creating active, contributing citizens.”
Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in
the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate
programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and
work in Pennsylvania.
